How much water should he drink?

I find that Harvey drinks considerably more than Jasper ever used to. Is this normal?

I fill his water bowl up every evening and there's usually less than 1/4 of a pint of water left. It holds 1.5 pints of water. Now, I can't discount the possibility that the cats dip into it daily, but they do have their own water bowl which I still fill as regularly as I did before. They tend not to go in Harvey's crate (where his bowl is)

I was wondering if this contributes to the runny poop issue we get some evenings between 6 - 10pm?

It seems an excessive amount of water. Do some dry feeds make them more thirsty than others? Would it help to dampen the food down, although I don't like to discourage the chewing and crunching to help tooth/gum health?

I have always filled St Sweeps bowl everyday. He always has hot water on his Skinners (he is spoilt!) - makes a sort of gravy - as yes dry food can make them thirstier. It maybe just that you notice it more as he isn't really out and about - maybe Jasper drank from puddles/out of troughs etc when out and about - Sweep certainly does!

As for his teeth and gums - mine have always had plenty of bones so never really thought about them crunching their dinner.

Hi,
50ml/kg/24hrs - rough idea as to how much water your dog needs in a day. Likely to be less if on tinned food. Will be more if had the runs as will drink more to compensate for fluid loss. However, if he is drinking much more than the above calculation and this is ongoing then it would be worth collecting a urine sample and popping down to your vets for a chat. Does he urinate more than usual?

I wouldn't say he does, but then being 12 weeks old, he goes out for wees quite often as he can't hold himself like a more mature dog.

I guess half a pint is probably soaked up by his floppy spaniel ears that are so long he treads on them when he has his nose on the ground.

Come to think of it Slinky....I am so thick! Jasper slept upstairs and had a bowl of water in the bedroom too, which he often drank most of overnight. Harvey only has one water source at present as he remains downstairs. He cannot reach the cat bowl as it's on a windowsill, along with their food, to stop him eating/drinking it.

He weighs just under 4 kgs as he was weighed at the vets on Saturday.

Dry food will make him thirsty and the odd loose faeces will as suggested as he is loosing fluid, so will make up for it by drinking more water.....sometimes pups will just drink cos it's there also.
My akita drinks about half a bucket of water a day.....and she has no health issues ( blame the stupidly thick coat she carries

I did wonder if he would just drink it because it's there......say when he has moments of waking whilst actually shut in the crate.

Thanks all. I'm not concerned, per se, but wondered if it was something I should mention to the vet or not.

Interestingly, we had no loose poops yesterday evening. Will be interesting to see if his water bowl remains more full today.

Rosie drinks alot for her size too. Some days she'll drink two bowl fuls some days just one. I suppose it depends on the weather (and central heating perhaps?) , and I noticed during the snow she was eating that too (which I discouraged) which would have made her drink less.

Mine would drink 3/4 of a big bowl a day and top that up with lots of water from streams

and they enjoyed all the snow and ice pops.
I wouldn't be overly concerned unless a puppy was draining multiple bowls every day, unless there is a medical conditions, some dogs just love water.
