as in title really.......there's a possibility a fell pony is coming up for sale near me, BUT, I weigh over 12 stone (eeek) (I'm not very tall...5ft 3) would that be too much for him to carry??

thanks for any replies/advice :-) :-)

Depends on the individual horse and what you intend to do with the animal work load wise, on the whole fells are quite strong stocky little ponies but with any breeds you get those who lean to the lighter side and those to the stockier side. If its quite stocky, young ish in good fit health i don't see why it won't carry you out hacking and light schooling, though you may have to think about the dreaded diet if you want to do heavy work and jumping. I rode a 13'2 fell when i was 9-10stone but am 59 and the little devil carried me without battering an eyelid and even poped some fences and showed know signs of strugling with me on board but he wasnt a horse i rode regulary jsut one i hacked out on occasionaly
There great ponies though real sweet and cuddly and usually pretty bombproof and fun to ride

I have two Fell ponies one brought for a summer project the other to sell from a well known stud and equine college.

I was told that a mature, fit, healthy, Fell with good conformation and well fitting tack would be capable of carrying 15 stone of well balanced rider for light work.

I've ridden the older of the two Fells and she copes with me just fine, I'm your height and probably a similar weight. My vet, saddler and physio have all confirmed that i am not too heavy for the ponies.

Fells are fantastic, I would go and try him and see how you feel :)

I'd only be gently hacking him (probably only walking as I'm nervous!) for about an hour, 2 maybe 3 days a week, & my friends daughter would be riding weekends, but she's only about 8 stone (lucky girl) I've recently joined weight watchers & I've lost 12 lb in 8 weeks, so hopefully I shall become lighter for him anyway

:-) xx

ooo well done on the diting, any tips i've 3st to loose to get back down to riding weight and my baby will be broken in next year!
I think the fell will be ifne for you i would definetly go check it out and trial ride a few times especially if your just up for some nervous hacking, if been well broken in and handled right will hopefully turn out to be a nice bombproof confidence giver for you which as your confidence grows you will be able to have more fun with as i adore these cute fell/dales ponies and they scrub up lovely for shows sleek black with often flowing fresian style manes and tails sadly am far to much of a tubster at the moment for these cute ponies am currently to heavy for my 15hh lustiano x quarter horse but then shes decided to grow from a stocky yearling into an super lean arab racehorse lol let just hope by next year she looks a bit stokier and that am 3st lighter!!!
