How much weight can a 16.3hh cob x carry?

I have a cob x arab gelding, 16.3hh, fairly muscly but with a few finer features, how much weight could he take? I have a friend wanting to loan but shes not small weightwise.

Shes experienced enough to carry her weight I think,I am crap with numbers but I guess about 5 foot 9 possibly more. I dont know her weight, not something I have asked, but shes definately over 16 stone. Not by loads but not very good with guessing :( hence why I am asking the max weight he could carry without him struggling or having any damage done to him.
 
You will get a range of answers. He looks a nice sort. If she was a balanced rider i wouldnt be afraid of puttng up to 15/16st on him. You dont say how old he is, if only a youngster 4/5 and still developing would cut limit down to reflect a bit.

No doubt someone will disagree with me.
 
I'd agree with splash - traditional cobs of 15hh with 10" of bone can carry 16+ stone (it's in their breed description) If your friend is experienced so not a dead weight but able to control and balance her weight she should be fine.
 
Personally if she's over 16stone I'd say no. I have gone from 15 stone down to 12 (1 more to go!!!!) and I can tell you my 16.3hh heavy cob is much appreciative!!! I had stopped riding the 15hh cob because I was worried about my weight but now can ride both without worry. Both my boys have a hell of alot more bone than yours does from you piccy (He's stunning btw!!).

I won't allow anyone over 15stone to ride my big lad now, I know he can carry more but I don't want him to. Just my opinion....as a 'big girl' myself!!;)
 
Thanks for comments on pic, he doesnt have much muscle as only just restarting his work routinely, he was just a push button start kinda horsey! He is 12 years old, not young but not old by any means! I am going to have to have a think on it I think! thanks for replies!

He is beautiful!! Good job I'm can't afford another one I'd loan him from you!!!:D New piccy shows his legs off better, they are pretty decent. It's really up to you and if the rider is light in her seat, I don't want to be judgemental cos like I said I've been (and no doubt will be again) a heavy rider myself.
 
I would say that he would take 16+ stone easily, I guess you would have to see if he is struggling, but I cannot see why he should not be a fabulous weight carrier. Cobs and Arabs are fabulous for weight carrying and if your friend is experienced and not a 16 stone dead weight there should be no problems.

I could imagine him being a very smart gentleman's hunter.
 
I wouldn't think he'd struggle with that sort of weight, he looks pretty solid and his breeding is well suited to weight carrying. Both Cobs and Arabs can carry more than average for their size. He's mature and sound, so why not give your friend a trial and see how he reacts, you'll see whether he looks happy and his usual self.
 
I'm 17stone and very apprehensive about riding horses unless I am very sure they would be up to my weight ..... I wouldn't think twice about riding your chap ;)

Ok, a comparison, I will post my lad which is ridden regularly and competed by someone that is 16 stone, he is 16.1 1/2 and ISH at 8 years old, does he look like he is struggling?

Sorry if they are big, just remember, size can be deceptive and weights. Give her a go.

Saddle plays a big part for weight carrying. If your horse can easily take an 18" saddle there shouldn't be a problem, but for a larger person to fit into a 17" saddle that's when pressure can build.
 
I would say give it a go...see how they get on if he looks like he's struggling then you ought to say so...

I would say your horse would easily carry 16 stone and more. There are plenty of larger men who hunt all day on smaller horses than him and they don't seem to struggle. Good point about the saddle raised earlier though.
 
Absolutely fine - so long as she is not over 18 stone (will be 19 with saddle) your horse will be fine. Assuming she isnt going to go storming round the countryside at 20mph!?!

Your horse has plenty of bone and is a real weight carrier, just what she knows. People underestimate horses weight carrying capacity when they are built like this. I love him.......in fact I would like to steal him please!
 
I absolutely LOVE your horse! Slightly off-topic, but I was browsing NFED and came across your ad for a hacking companion, and for a moment thought that you were looking for someone to ride him for you - I was almost dialling your number before I realised that wasn't what you meant! He's beautiful. :)

I used to weigh 16 stone when I first started riding (and probably still would if it weren't for horses!) and I don't think I would have felt too big for your boy, although I probably would have stuck to walk because I wasn't very balanced then and hadn't developed a light seat yet, so I would have worried about lumping around on his back. But for a rider who carries their own weight well and doesn't bounce around or unbalance the horse, I don't think you'd have anything to worry about. Probably best to ask her weight first though, and make sure she's not actually 20 stone and hiding it well! If you ask her tactfully and don't make a big issue out of it, I'm sure she wouldn't be offended - she'd probably be glad that you care for your horse enough to make sure.

No, definitely not advertising for them! It was the only one I had that showed his bone off and clean. I wouldn't have any problems with helping them advertise if they actually gave me something but I got nothing as they were taken before I bought him. Gets a bit tedious opening every catalogue and there he is staring at me!!
 
Oh my days, thank you too everybody that has replied, he is a stunner i love him too bits, so nice to see other people say it too!! Lurky - he is up for loan now ;) I will see how he gets on with rider..

he has an 18 inch ridiculously expensive custom fitted saddle, nearing 18.5, its very very wide!! x
 
I would say if she is not so large she can't sit in a saddle without 'overflowing' and can ride effectively, she is unlikely to do any damage!
