Hi,

I'm a bit confused as to how much weight these 3 ponies/horses can carry prior to speaking to an experienced stud owner today - just wanted to see what you guys think!!

1) A small 14.2hh gelding. Not quite sure his breeding but we think he has arab in him and cob in him. 20ish now. (sorry not sure if you could tell me unless you've seen him as unsure on breeding)
2) A 14.3hh cob, 14yo.
3) 14.3hh cob with arthritis, 15yo.
4) 16.1hh tb, 7yo.

Sorry if you couldn't tell me without seeing them, i just wanted a rough idea on your thoughts!!

Depends on the type of weight. Do you mean dead weight as in packs, or novice riders or experienced riders? And it depends on the horse's build in terms of bone, back length, strength, health, saddle size etc.
Sorry!

no easy answer to that one, would depend on so many things.
Are they all in good health? do they have good bone? How good is the rider going to be(a heavy good rider will be less of a burdan the a light novice)?

would be a bit easier if you had some pics to see there build etc, if ya get some post them up so we can take a nosey 1 and 3 not too much weight as 3 has arthritis and 1 will obviously be a finer sort if you feels he has arab the other 2 could probibly take a fair bit more if they are both in fine health

2) A 14.3hh cob, 14yo. 11 stone person who can ride well

3) 14.3hh cob with arthritis, 15yo. 11 stone person who can ride well

4) 16.1hh tb, 7yo. if he is medium build - 12 -13 stone with a good rider maybe a bit more

You see I would add two stone to each of those weights as a maximum, depending on the intensity and duration of work, they could easily carry more on a gentle hack, but if being asked to go show jumping or hunting for several hours the weight would come down to the kind of figures you mentioned unless being ridden by somebody competent who rides light.

Hello

I do agree with you but I just thought these are good comforatble weights for them overall - they could carry more but I think the weights are realistic for long hacks and hunting and schooling - yes I would agree a bti more if they were ambling about once or twice a week! :-)
