How much weight (rider weight) would you put on a -

15hh rising 14yo Connemara x TB mare with 8.5" of bone, big shoulders, broad lady taking an xw saddle? When in regular work, is out competing every weekend (local SJ, this year likely to jump up to 85-90cm, does some small ODEs. Ridden daily, hacked out for up to 4 hours etc.

I'm not taking about an every day weight, but an occasional rider, I know I'm fine to ride her! Rider I'm thinking of is an experienced rider, but a little confidence loss, and is 5ft6.

Depends how the rider holds their weight but I'd say 13-14 stone max on the occasional basis, not jumping heights of course.
I reckon your madam would let you know if she wasnt happy ;) x

Rider would only be on for the occasional hack out in mostly walk, trot with a little canter.

She's lost a lot of confidence hacking since she had an accident out in the woods and fell off, her horse is a bit nutty to hack (very very sensitive and strong) so I'm trying to persuade her she's not too heavy as my horse, I'm confident would look after her 100% and give her back the confidence she's lost.

We've got one a hand higher, but with nowhere near the breadth and depth your very nice mare has - and she carries a 12.5 stone whipper-in (cr*p rider) all day in hilly country without any difficulty. For short hacks or a lesson, I'd say your mare would carry up to 14 stone of balanced rider.

I'd say 14 too for that level of work. I've got a 14.2, & my 13 stone friend rode her lightly with no trouble. Not sure I'd have wanted her doing much, but pony was hunting fit at the time & will always make her thoughts on a rider very clear!

My mare is same height and build and she didn't look happy when my husband got on her and he is 14 stone! Luckily he decided to hang up his riding boots as I wouldn't have let him on her again!

Gorgeous :D I would also say about 14 stone of a balanced rider.....

Why does that first photo crack me up?

I have no idea, I didn't disclose the after effects - I fell off shortly after landing :p but love that pic!

Thanks everyone, it's nice to hear others think she's nice (I mostly get 'oh she's nutty' comments after they've heard about my entertaining ride - yesterday being a good one - came up to a log in the woods, bearing in mind she jumped like a saint beginning of march, got a squeal and a large pop and a buck over the log, then cantered off up the hill shaking her head in excitement!) as I think she's pretty amazing :D

If I remember correctly, rider is under 14 stone, and she does carry herself well. She's an ex show jumper (ex being the operative word!) and rode her before we bought her but hasn't dared get back on her since, despite being better behaved! She claims she's too heavy for her (get out tactic), so im very glad others think that my horse won't struggle with her.
