And what size are they?

I only fill my horses' hay hutches up once a day, so I know what they eat in 24 hours, but I'm not sure what they eat in just night time alone....

In 24 hours, Star eats about 15kg of haylage, and Be varies quite a bit, but generally about 8-10kg of plain hay (both have it ab lib). I am guessing that they eat most of it at night, as they aren't very often eating it whenever I'm there in the daytime.

My horse was eating around 13lbs of haylage a night - it's now gone up to around 16lbs (i've stopped weighing it).

Ooh, you little monkey, now I've had to try and work out the kg to lbs maths!
grin.gif

I think that is about 7 1/4 kgs (??), so approx half what Star eats in a whole day. Am I right in thinking that T is about 17hh, and in what sort of level work? Do you field feed any hay(lage) during the day too?

Thanks. x

16.2hh, fit and in reasonable work. It could be more than 16lbs. But as I say, I stopped weighing it once he started wanting more (I was concerend at how little he was eating). I'll weigh it tomorrow now you've got me thinking about it.

No hay in the field. However, he's only out for two full days a week, because he get's exercised 5 days a week, so is in with hay on those mornings. Still got a good bite on the fields.

it does vary but on average 20lb of haylege at night and around 6 during day, with a few hours of not so good grazing

but these are for a 16.2hh and there and in commercial work, there not soo young and dont get too much feed

My 16.2 TB gets 20lb hay a night, is worked daily. Out in field for about 4-5 hours in day, not much grass left now but enough for her to pick at - she doesn't get hay in field.

Axel has a big haynet full of haylage, I weighed it once and it was about 15kg and he still has some left in the morning, the fussy sod won't eat it if it goes on the floor tho. He has a smaller net in the day if he's in and will finish that one.
Will weigh them next time out of interest.

I get like that about Star as she used to eat far too little forage when stabled (cribber) and she is a little prone to getting colicky if not having enough

So now I tend to monitor her consumption very carefully, and as she gets older I get more worried... Since I found this haylage supplier though I am thrilled at how much she eats,

and how it helps her condition but I am still a little obsessive about checking how much she eats and poos though

I've also got a little fanatical about weighing stuff

but as well as the health aspect, it helps me budget

Where I did my placement in the summer all the nets were weighed for each individual horse. At night they had soaked hay which was very roughly: ponies 6lbs, 14.2 8/10lbs, 15.2 12lbs, big horses 14/16lbs. The horses tended to have a bit left over in the morning but the ponies ate every scrap. My own horses have adlib and I'd say my 15hher eats about 12lbs and leaves all the rest.

Yes, Star has about 2 large slices of haylage every day

If they're smaller than usual sections (like the new bale that I've just opened has been) then I go up to 3, and when it's been mild weather, and they are large sections, then some days she only needs one more, but either way I just fill her hay hutch to the top each day

I'm a huge fan of letting them have good forage ab lib

I can't believe how little forage and how great amount of hard feed some feed companies websites recommend

15.3hh tb lw mare has 20lbs of haylage a night and between 10-14lbs in the day depending on her mood (in 24/7)

my 16.1 tb mw gelding gets 16lbs of haylage a night, he is out for about 7 hours a day, i might cut him down as he is a fatty.

Mine is eating between 7-8kg a night in hay, so probably about 9-10kg in total a day. Thats from about 3.30pm until 7am. She is out all day. She is also getting about 1.5kg in alfa and 500g in speedibeet a day though, so a fair bit of forage!!

I know. YO is big ad lib haylage fan - we use the massive shires? red and black nets which fit about 2 1/2 slices in - but I can't lift them alone!!

LOL! Yes, I have to move my hay & haylage in the wheelbarrow, and can't manage it otherwise, but then the whiplash doesn't help things!

Marius is in at night - about 4 pm until about 9.30 am, and has 12 - 14 lbs of soaked hay a night. He's out on reasonable grazing during the day. He's 25, pretty much retired and lami-prone. He also has a supper of one scoop of Dengie Good Do-er, and one scoop of hi fibre nuts in his ball.

16.1 m/w warmblood mare has approx 18lbs haylage per night plus 8lbs of chaff and high fibre nuts split into two feeds.

my 15.1 TB x Con gelding has approx 6lbs of high fibre nuts and chaff split into 2 feeds plus 6-8lbs of hay. He doesn't seem to be eating much of the hay at the moment. I do mix a bit of haylage in with it for him which he loves but if I give him too much, he gets hyper!

my boy is 16hh and growing!! (he's only 2) and is getting through 16lbs a night plus any straw he choses to eat from his bed! - he's not starved - he's just a pig and would eat it over his hay!!

I have no idea how much Ellie eats, weight wise. I work in wedges, scoops and handfuls, and as far as hay/haylage is concerned, I feed her as much as she will eat (and if there is lots leftover, I take that as a sign I have fed her too much so I reduce it a little!) I honestly wouldnt have a clue how much she gets in terms of measurement, but everyone keeps complimenting me on how well she looks so I can't be getting it too wrong

I haven't got a clue how much mine eats. All I know is it is not enough for my liking.

He is really fussy about hay/haylage. I thought I had it sorted, found a really nice hay supply that he would gobble down and he would eat 4-5 slices overnight of that.

Then the supply ran out.

At the moment he has a choice of hay and haylage, he forces down about a slice of hay and maybe a third of a slice of big bale haylage. But the rest he just drags round his bed in temper!

Star was like that when stabled.

It's a worry isn't it.

I used to give her a big rubber bucket full of dengie senior, alfa A, and sugar beet.

I'm gutted I don't need to feed her dengie senior anymore as it smells yummy!
