So - on a diet to ride my mare and want your opinions....

15.1 and a bit, 10 inches of bone - practically perfect in every way. God I love her!

At college we had a weight limit of 13 stone even on the black and white cobs... but tbh i wouldnt be to say as you get all shapes and sizes riding now :D

I would say it depends on how fit the horse is and how balanced the rider. My friend has a very similar horse and she is about 14 stone, looks absolutely fine on her. xx

I thought that the 20% guide was one to go by. So, if she is fit (not overweight) the rider, plus saddle and rider's clothes/hat/body protector etc... should add up to a maximum 20% of the horse's weight. The horse should be fit to carry the upper end of that weight limit.

this ^^

This is a very rough guess, its very hard to estimate from a picture. My boyfriend is 15stone fully dressed. The odd time he decides he fancies riding, he rides a similar size cob to yours. But cob is 650kg plus, very fit, & solid muscle. Boyfriend isn't horsey, so its usually a very quiet short hack, & only every few months. And although he can't ride, he's active & healthy enough himself that he isn't thudding about. So I'm guessing 15stone, but, without seeing horse in the flesh I could be wrong either way.

She weight tapes at 585kg at the minute but we all know how inaccurate they can be. She isn't hunting fit by any means, she is currently being hacked out by a friend and brought on by a professional. When I am back riding - and obviously it will be a gradual return she will be expected to hack out twice a week for about 2 hours at a time - walk, trot and canter (I don't do gallop :) ) , have a flatwork lesson, half hour schooling sessions 3-4 times a week.

Exactly 10.3st (i.e me) so you'll have to send her to me, sorry. ;) I could swap you a 16hh orange twiglet instead?

She's lovely :D

She's very similar to Pink (who's a boring black colour :() if a little smaller.

I'd let her carry 15-16st rider without too much worry (then 1.5st of tack, on the assumtion she has a large-as-she-can-manage wide-paneled, well fitting saddle). That's about the '20% rule' too. But no more than about 14st if the ride is novice, unfit or unbalanced.

She'd carry a bit more when very fit but she does look rather tubby and unfit in that photo so that reduces her ability to carry riders weight.

hey Billie :)

I would say 15 stone comfortably, 16 stone if not doing very much.

Come on girl - you will be there before you know it. She is a beautiful mare and perfect motivation for you.

How are you getting on? I have hit an epic fail today as had 4 roast tatties with my roast chicken  Oh well - I suppose I am allowed one treat? :o

I'm not sure if this is practical or not but I have just thought of something that might help. Could you get her broken to drive? The longlining etc to prepare her is great exercise, & whilst you are losing weight you could drive her. Driving muscles are different to ridden ones, but if you could get her fit & muscular under harness, she'd be able to carry you at a higher weight. And I don't mean give up on your weight loss & stick to driving, just in the short term. But I realise breaking her to drive & getting her very fit under harness will be costly in time & money, so I'm more than prepared for you to say its not an option.

my hoss tapes at the same weight as yours he is 6 years looks around same build as yours mine is 15.3. i weight in at 15.3 stone and my boy has no bother carrying me

She is a heavyweight cob so should be able to carry over 14 stone, it would depend on age, fitness and what is expected of her.

Agree with this HW cob - class description of HW cob says "to carry over 14st" Wouldn't put more than 16 though for certain and don;t forget the weight of tack, clothes

this. I am currently working on a diet so I can ride my 13.3 without feeling so guilty... she's built like a brick ****house but according to that rule, which is a good one to go by, the maximum weight she should carry is 11 stone.
