How much will a dog adapt to an owners lifestyle

A cat with a cat flap would be perfect especially an older one

Maybe that’s where I got mixed up.
My last little dog before Doug was a shih-tzu x I loved him. They are great characters

Definitely sounds like a cat is more suitable. We got a Siamese kitten after my first major operation and he was a fantastic companion. He soon learnt to jump up when I tapped a chair/table/other piece of furniture because I couldn't bend down to stroke him so he needed to come up. He also came on little walks with me when I was starting to walk again after further ops and coped fine with wheelchairs, Zimmer frames and crutches along the way.

That’s so cute! I’ve noticed our cat is hanging out more and more with me and old collie. He comes on little walks too ?

I do think dogs are very adaptable and some will certainly slot into an owner's lifestyle but that particular situation sounds like a no win really. Your friend needs to look at breeds that are bred for the type of lifestyle she can offer - and they will be fairly few and far between, but probably something like a CKCS or one of the lap dog type breeds. Even then, puppies of all breeds are a handful and hard work. I think the idea of a cat is a good one.
