I have just got an advanced eventer on loan. he has been out of work since october. i went to ride him last week and that was only the second time he had been ridden in three months. he still looks fit and healthy. he is being hacked out now at home in walk. how much walk/trot/canter do i need to do before i can jump? he is eventing up to novice with me so needs to be PN fit by april. how much do i need to do before working him fully?

I do a week of walk work per month they've had off - so 3 weeks in walk building up time and intensity and brining in hills etc. Then add in trot work, then canter etc.

And more to the point, who loans out an unfit ex-adv horse, to someone who doesn't know how to do a fitness plan for it, without giving them some advice?

Probably the lady with the 'rescue centre' who kicked up a fuss about us discussing the advanced eventer she'd advertised on project horses!
(Noticed she hadn't learnt her lesson from that as he is in H&R ads now!)

I'm assuming it's Down To You then.

I agree that its slightly worrying theyve let you have him after one ride in walk and you're having to post for advice on how to get him fit.....
You're looking at 3 months of gradual building up if he's been off a while before you can event.

I have a general question on fitness. The average week of walk per week of month off is a general guideline. However, if the horse has been kept in it's daily routine during time off - stable, reduced feed, turnout and walker, just no riding, how much fitness can you assume they have kept. As opposed to a horse that has been turned away to grass for a number of months.

i don't think it would make that much difference tbh, i guess you could look at it like the walker is replacing the amount of moving around said horse would have done overnight if it had of been in the field as apposed to the stable... as Thistle said the horse may be walking for 15/20 mins (or however long its on the walker) but not 'working', the horse needs to be condidtioned to carry the riders weight so i would start from scratch..

yeah its down to you. hes not owned by an advanced eventer now, so she didn't give me a fitness programe. my trainer is helping me but i was just asking for advice on him.
