If I can't save the situation with my amazing loan horse...

I'd be looking for a horse established at pre- novice and would go further, aged 10ish or under, who can teach me. I'm a competent rider but not had masses of experience riding competition horses as such and only been competing affiliated since July, hence why I'd be looking for a horse to learn on.

I've had a brief look online and seems I'd be looking at 7-8k then tack on top, but some people seem to think the 4500 I'd of spent on my loan horse would be sufficient. Am I looking in the wrong places?

I'm no expert but I think the key phrase is 'would go further'. I reckon for £5000 or thereabouts you might find something that's done a few prenovice, is reasonably straightforward, but maybe wouldn't easily go novice. Or something thats done PN and would go further but not quite as easy/straightforward.
I reckon if you want something to help you to an extent round N or more, your price range is more realistic! Obviously there are exceptions....
I know two people selling horses ATM, one has a SJer who has jumped Newcomers and is pretty straightforward and has XC schooled very well but never evented - he's just been reduced from £8000 to £6500 (started at £9000!), another has a horse with wins at PN that has done a N but isn't a schoolmaster at that level and last I heard she was advertise for £8000 and hadn't yet sold....
