This is the wish list we have come up for our new hunter. How much would we expect to pay for something like this?

Looking for an experienced hunter aged between 6 – 9
Between 15.3hh – 16.3hh
No vices – must be easy to catch, clip, load in a trailer, shoe etc.
Easy to do in every way
Happy to be stabled on its own and out in the field on its own although there are other horses nearby
Must jump hedges, timber, ditches etc in front or behind
Will be required to go visiting so want a horse that will cope with all sorts of country and jump anything.
Happy to go off on point if required on its own.
Stands at the meet
Strong enough to carry man occasionally but polite enough for me (8.5 stone) to hunt all day
Legs of steel
Keen but polite and not overly strong
ISH type or ¾ bred would be ideal
Happy to be exercised on its own
No niggling injuries – must pass 5 stage vetting

Something for both of us to have real fun on hunting, team chasing, hunter trials etc and really easy to do. Really fun and honest point and kick horse ideal!!!

We have decided that if we are going to get something new its go to fit the bill 100%!!

That and everybodies elses wish list!! , if you find one that fits the bill, then I'll fight you for it

I'll warn you though, I punch like a girl

In a good market, I would budget at least £10k for that description. As things are you MIGHT find something for 7-8k particularly if you are prepared to have it now when it is not fit.

£6 - 7500 I would think, perhaps more.
Its the ideal hunting horse - pretty hard to fiind and worth a lot of money.
We had a horse like this who is now hunting with the Quorn. He was 17.2 purebred ID. He was sold as a hunter for £6,500 at 4 years old to a novice even though the horse was still quite green. But he was a nice sensible type to start off with.

A Lot!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Good luck. Have you decided what to do with Happy yet?

It would be a total star wouldn't it?!!

The most important thing I think would be the horse had to be a nice person as well as a fantastic jumper. Perhaps I'm asking too much.

Sold one that fits this bill perfectly a couple of years ago, 3/4 bred ISH Clover Hill lines and got 5 1/2K for him, but they are hard to come by! Ask about in your local hunt something might turn up. Good luck

ive just sold my coloured, hes gone off to be a huntsman horse.. he sold for 5k.

he also had a sj record, affliated/county level show record was safe around kids on the beach on the moors.. and 100% in traffic.

How big Spaniel?!!!

In short I think my advert should say looking for honest, loveable and genuine fun hunter - a few more people might reply then!!

A regular forum user...!!!!...... is just in the process of selling one of these. Quite a serious/jumping type of hunter. I think the price tag was 8.5k

I am in the South East - am in Dorset but am from West Sussex so happy to go back there to find something or happy to find something in the West Country.

If anyone has any ideas let me know!! Thanks - we've got up to £7.5k to spend.

For that money you should find a VERY good horse, I have never paid more than £2k for a horse and the one in my earlier post that I sold I bought for £500!!!!

Contact Fred or Lisa Ford at The Morelands Stud/Billy Stud. He will find you something. Or as above phone the kennels. Good luck. Tally ho

Guildford Im in the process of doing photos and description so will PM you when ready. Give me a day or two so I can take 'dry' pics!

I was chatting to a lady out cubbing last year who told me she'd just paid over 8K for something like that and been looking for nearly 2 years...(hers was a mare if that makes a difference)

Happy horse hunting

I bought something of similar description 3 years ago for 2k. Whipped in with one of Leics hunts. Can sometimes be a pest with his jumping at home - generally ok when you are out hunting. Jumps hedges/ditches/timber and is good with banks (and hes def not Irish!)

Shame you're not up this way. I heard yesterday that Roger Rimmer is selling all of his next month and you would have had a great choice from those as they all (about 30 of them!) do exactly what it says on the tin!

Hi there,

I might have one that is suitable! Not sure where you are though! He is 16.3hh Roan just turned 10yr and been huntsmans horse and in the field with 5ft1 lady rider! Jumps anything has team chased xc and showjumped.
Pm if you interested - he is the roan in my sig! (forgot to say he is advertised at £6500)

They aren't as rare as everybody seems to think, you've just got to know where to look. Depends what weight youre looking for as well. Plenty of ID X foot perfect hunters in Ireland - you just need the right contacts.

I doubt you will get that for 7.5K, made good hunters are few and far between. I think you will be looking to spend 10k-15k at least. You sound like you are a good rider and know your stuff, why dont you buy a nice sensible young horse that has all the basics and can jump a bit and take it cubbing plenty and make it yourself. Or try and buy a cheap ex showjumper that has reached its limit or chucked it and re invent it as a hunter, my best hunter was a warmblood showjumper that got to Foxhunter level and was too carfull to go any further so I gave him a quick career change to a hunter he was the best, safest, bravest horse I ever hunted. He hunted till he was 20 still good legs no knocks or wear, but he got bad cataracts and went blind. Although not cheap I paid 5.5k for him in 1993!! But never owed me a penny.
Even futher North where I live good made hunters are expensive, but if I hear of anything will let you know. But if you do find utopia for 7.5k let me know I will go and buy it!!!

The one Spaniel has was hunted by my OH with the Quorn- he highly recommends the horse- if OH wasnt broken and off riding for a year then he would be on his way with cash!

I just sold OH's big horse who ticks all the OP boxes, sailed through a 5* vetting barring one flexion- never unsound with us- for £2.5k... they are out there, you just have to look.

ETA there are some very nice young horses at reasonable prices with http://www.irishhorseimports.co.uk/ Katherine hunts with us and is always wellmounted. 17hh dark bay at bottom of 2nd page £2500 is also recommended by OH, he tried him out hunting and liked lots but as i have said, we are not now in a position to buy.
