How much would it cost to build a lunge pen?

I would want it to be at least 20m in diameter, as an absolute minimum, as it will ride/lunge a bit smaller than that. Nothing worse than tiny lunge pens, with surface banked up at the soides and horses trotting round bending the wrong way.

Personally, I would go for a 25m square. The slight enlargement means some hay/water can go in the corners and voila, you have a all weather turnout pen. You can also vary the circles, which not only means the horse has mind exercise, but the surface isn't always worn out in the same place, so less tracking. It is a better space for long reining and means a more dynamic session, with changes of rein. You could also fit in a small jump.

As for cost, it really is how long is a piece of string. I'm sure you could find someone to do it for under 10K, and someone else for over £40K, if you tried. That would be for a professional job, good groundworks is the key.

Unless you are going to free school, why do you need a pen to lunge?

As Red said, the footing is the important bit and the cost of that will depend on your ground.

Is this lunge pen instead of the arena you asked about in a previous post, or as well as? If it's as well as, and you aren't building for multiple users, I'd just have the arena done to a standard you can lunge on, much better than lunging in small circles.

I have recently had a 25m square built, as Red-1 describes, post and railed, three corners matted as feeding areas for under £15K all in. Used an agricultural contractor who has a horsey wife so he understood what I wanted! It’s sand, drains very well-couldn’t be more pleased with it. I only have ponies so it’s plenty big enough for me.

You lunge in circles anyway?

Honestly I was just asking for prices of a lunge pen?

Gosh, how rude. People have answered that, but also given the benefit of their experience as to what works best. This is a discussion forum, after all. I'm sure most of us are wishing we hadn't bothered now!

I’m in Ireland and was thinking of installing a roofed 20m round pen last winter. The price of steel has since increased 200% and diesel is twice the price too. I was quoted in the region of €16,000 for a 20m pen with a conical roof and rubber covered wooden shutters delivered for my builder to fabricate. I would also need a concrete pad and 100 tonnes of sand so north of €20,000 prior to price inflation. I opted for a 20mx40m sand school which without fencing (too expensive at this time) cost about €26,000. About 1/8th of the area was very wet during excavation so double drainage, membrane, stone, digger hours and labour. It has 9” depth of sand and has been very successful.

Is this the vexatious poster popping up under another persona?

It would appear so. Last one hasn’t been seen for a few days and the questions are in the same vain. It’s getting a bit boring now not to mention a waste of people’s time especially when they go to a lot of effort to reply.
