Hi all,

I have been asked to look after a woman at the yards horse for a month when she is in America. I will be doing everything for the horse including exercising 3 times a week. How much would you charge for this as dont want to ask for to much or to little?

I would either work out how many hours it will take you, and charge about £10/hr or charge her the amount it would cost her for full livery in your area minus the cost of the DIY if she is paying someone else for the stable.., for example, part livery costs about £75/wk around here, plus £10 per exercise, but you should deduct the £20 or whatever she pays for stable and whatever food it has if that is being provided..

personally i would charge £20 a week

For me if i am going up any way its no skin off my nose to muck out/do one more, im happy to be riding

I would also hope that in doing it so cheaply they would return the favour if needed

£70 a week all in including exercise as your not pay for the hay straw feed etc she still is... also businesses are charging for elec water use of facilities etc so she will be paying her usual livery bill plus your fee....

I pay my horse sitter £10 per day wich includes mucking out and feeding etc all in but she is also insured should something go wrong..

Ontop of that Im paying my normal livery bill.... and hay straw etc etc

:o

Busybee i was thinking about £20 a week as i will be up there anyway although work split shifts and the added pressure of riding her horse means my horse will be lucky to get exercised the whole 4 weeks. She isnt a friend and will be moving to the states in February though so i dont feel i should do it for free.

£20 a week isnt nearly enough. you might be there but I'm sure that if you were away you wouldn't get it that cheap!

maybe £10 a day, for the extra time for mucking out and an extra £10 for when you ride! but its a month you will be doing it, its quite a commitment!

£10 per day minimum i charge £8 full livery no riding

why would you do it so cheap she wont be there to return the favour, what is she doing with the horse when she goes?

I charge £10 per day for two visits, it usually takes me about an hour to muck out, turnout, bring in, lay beds, feeds, pick out feet, change rugs etc.

I would then charge another £10 for riding

Hmm im so confused i have asked people at my yard some people seem to think £10 plus £10 for riding is acceptable but some to much. It is going to add atleast 2 hours onto each day and thats without riding. The horse is moving to a riding school they just cannot take it until the beginning of february. It has to be kept fit though as will be doing a lot of work at the school.

Id charge £10 a day as well. Personally, however, I wouldn't charge extra to ride as I'd see it as a perk not an extra chore ... Maybe that's just me ;) it would depend how much you'd be pushed for time with the riding as to wether you charged.

If its of any help.... I'm out of action wth a broken leg.

I'm paying my lovely livery £70 a week to feed/turnout/muck out & bring in mine with possible rug change & twice weekly brush-off. (a family member is also popping in to groom once or twice a week when she has time)
1 is a young, easy to handle horse & the other is 33" Tiny Fuzzy who is just skipped out. She says it takes a total of 25 mins to do all 3 (hers included) every morning & the same in the afternoon including poo-picking paddocks which are right by the yard.
I was forwards thinking enough to have a barn with a full winter hay ration & also enough bedding which should last till around mid April.

I dont think I pay her enough, but I am on statutory sick pay and have no other cash left over, so have also asked her to not pay me livery till I am back 'in harness' again :)

Maybe to ride one day a week would be pleasurable but 3 days a week means im not going to be able to keep my own horse exercised as well. £1.42 an hour is awful thanks for breaking that down for me i think £10 a day including riding is okay if she was a friend i would do it for nothing.

If you are not a professional groom with quals, insurance, paying tax etc then I'd charge max £50 a week. I personally wouldn't charge her for riding unless you are a professional schooling her horse for her, but if she's willing to pay then maybe an extra fiver for the days you ride? I don't see why it would take 2 hours a day to do one horse, without riding it's half an hour, one hour max. Plus you're already going up there anyway, it will pay your petrol and them some. You never know, it may get you more work with other liveries :)

How much do you earn per hour at work??

Multiply that figure by 2, and then again by 28. If you're not particularly friends, then you are just doing her a favour. Take it as though it is work.

Are you insured? If exercising for money I'd make sure her horse is covered for riders or you are covered or tack this cost on.
The rest ad others have said 10/hour. Also get in writing what to do if vet needed (ie she will cover charges if ypu think needed) etc not worth leaving til you have a problem and can't get in touch

Scrooge, regardless of quals she's been asked to exercise the horse, taking time away from her own and is a completely different ball game to just mucking out etc. Would cost a lot more to get someone else to exercise so I don't see why she shouldn't charge for this.

As others have said £10 per day plus extra for riding. £5 for half hour is the going rate where I am for a non-professional (time counted for grooming and tacking up and un tacking too).

Oh - and make sure you get 2 weeks money in advance (£140), and the remaining money £140 + riding time when they get back. Keep a book and get others to sign your riding times too just in case. x

I would charge £70 but get yourself insurance to cover your back should anything happen. Cover every outcome - what you are allowed to go up to with the vets bills if you can't contact her, everything. I would throw in the riding perhaps at that price, or add on another £10, but its probably better to have a set amount every week.

Thanks everyone for your great advice, to be honest this is a one off and i wont be doing it again so dont want to go in to insurance etc. I have decided to leave it up to the person in question to leave me whatever they think is acceptable. As long as it covers any feed bedding etc i use i will be happy. All the best when the time comes xxx
