How much would you clip...?

A native, who is actually SO hairy that it's currently about two inches long but will grow to three over the winter, out 24/7, good weight at the moment but will lose some, and is competed most weekends, but not ridden a lot in the week. How much would you clip? Currently got a med. trace but would you take of any more? You seriously don't understand how hairy this pony is/ will get! Thanks! xxxxxx
 
Nothing more than a trace to be honest. If he was to be stabled then a blanket clip, but out 24/7, you need to leave him with some protection over his neck.
 
Well I would take off as much as you want to. As long as he is well rugged up no worries. Far better that he is dry and cool when you finish riding. Mine all hunter clipped and out 24/7.
 
Oh yes meant to say that I'd make sue he's always got a rug and neck cover on, and I have numerous under rugs that I can use too. Because at the moment, even just plopping round the block, he's coming back hot and sweaty and the hair goes all curly and icckkk! Don't want to take it all off, but he's still sweating up loads on his neck and shoulders above the clip line, but if I were to blanket clip him it would take all that off, leaving the area that is the only part of him that doesn't get sweaty. Ideally I would only do a little clip, but he is actually SO hairy, really thick coarse stuff too, but I don't want to over-clip... Thanks!
 
If he's got a full neck then I'd go for a hunter clip, prob leaving the face on (maybe just take the lower face off).

He'll be much happier without all that fluff if he's working hard.

You can always buy an extra rug if he's cold, and poss a quarter sheet. Plus he'll prob have grown most of it back by the year year anyways.

I would probably go for a blanket clip too. My warmbloods which are in during the day and out at night have a shortened chaser clip (not taken as far back as their stifles) with their necks, half face and girth/elbows/belly taken off - in other words where they sweat - and are then rugged according to he weather.

Better to have a comfortable horse than to worry about what other people think.
 
If you have suitable rugs and the ponio is very hairy i would take it all off except face and legs... but thats just me.... a blanket would do as well

My native pony has a cross between a blanket and a chaser see photo below. He is a hot pony and overheats very easily though and the hair that is removed is from the areas he sweats. Before he was first clipped in Oct he was sweating just walking in from the fields. He is out 24/7 but does have access to a field shelter and his fields are very sheltered as they are mainly surrounded by woods and hedges not post and rail. He is also fat (but is starting to slim down since this photo was taken) At the moment he is in a 150g no neck rug and when I check him at 7pm at night he is warm. Natives often have big thick manes which help keep their necks warm too. This will be his last clip of the year though and I imagine most of his hair will have grown back before the worst of the weather comes in Jan Feb time and he will then have a warmer rug on as well.

Ok, thanks for all your help! Just I know some people have strong views on over-clipping and don't want them to think I'm inconsiderate or anything =P He's already got a trace, so will probably just change it into a blanket, which shouldn't be too hard lol! or possibly a hunter, but i may as well leave his back and quarters on as he doesn't sweat up there too much. Will speak to his owner (I have him on full/permanent loan) and just check if she thinks that's ok.
 
mine lives out 247 and has hunter clip - she is well rugged and needs clipping so much as she also sweats alot.
take off what you need as long as well rugged
 
mines like this. he had a LW rug on yesterday just to keep him clean and he came in sweaty. even short hack and he will be sweating. I hunter clip and then rug up well but he's in at night and has a lovely layer of fat to protect him!!
