how much would you expect to be paid?

I'm going to advertise for someone to turn my horse out on a sunday morning (getting up early every day is really taking it's toll and I need a lie in <call me lazy if you must>)

basically what would you expect to pay or be paid for Picking feet out, changing rug and turning out. it takes me from arriving at the yard to leaving, 15 mins Max.

If it's someone who's already on your yard then there wouldn't be any travel expenses as they would be going up there already, so I think £5 would be ok.

If it's someone who has to make a special journey to your yard then it depends on how far they have to travel.

Could you make an arrangement with somene else that you do their horse on a weekday and they do yours on Sunday? It won't cost you anything then.
 
i wish i could, but everyone else doesn't go to yard until at least 9am, normally 9.30 and seeing as my boy usually goes out at half 6 he'd be climbing the walls. (sighs)
 
At my yard, it's £1.50 to turn out or catch in and that includes rug changes/feet/hosing if required. The groom does say 11 horses on a weekend. It's £6 to do the whole day, turn out, catch in, muck out, feed, rug changes etc.
 
I wonder if you might find it difficult to find someone just to do these couple of jobs, whether it would be worth their time for the money, by the time they've travelled to you etc?

Maybe it would be worth making it up to an hours work, including a full muck out perhaps? I think the going rate around here is around £10 per hour for this, on a sunday morning :)

ETA just seen your last post, I think you'd be looking at a minimum of £10 if you wanted somewhere to be there before 9am on a sunday.
 
You do need to be careful that you are not employing someone to do this. If you do then you will have to pay the minimum wage - which is about £7 I think. You might be better either asking them to do a full hour's work and paying £10 or offering them a benefit in kind like a ride. The advantage of the latter is that you might attract a younger person who might be more willing. I can't see an adult in full time employment rocking out for 15 minutes work! That said - if you do go for a younger person you need to ensure they are over 14.

Employment laws can be a pain - but it is worse if you fall foul of them!

the price is similar on my yard but the ladies who manage it rarely go up before 10am on a sunday so i wouldn't be able to ask them to do it!
£6 for the whole day is a bargain! we'd get charged £2 for the morning turnout and rug change, £3 for a brush off and hoof pick, £5 for the Mucking out, water and hay and then another £2 and £3 in the evening!

Altho when i broke my wrist last winter they were brilliant and did it all for £5 a day!

Before people jump on me, how many people would want to go to a yard, no doubt have to unlock padlocks etc (in the snow and all weathers) spend maybe just 15 minutes changing rugs, picking out feet, and turning a horse out, for less? If somebody is already working at the yard, and has a few to do, then it's more worth their while. My friend does horse-sitting etc as her business, and would charge £11, which is her minimum rate.

I had thought about the employment law malarkey, Min wage is £5.96. also thought about getting them to muck out too so i can have more of sunday with my OH. also thought about a ride in return but he's a pacer and anyone who can ride doesn't want to ride a pacer and anyone who can't ride isn't capable fo riding him!! Can't be doing with children- they have to rely on transport etc which can make even the keenest child unreliable. Past experience.

I think at the moment people here are just thinking in terms of what they might charge if they were at the yard with you. It's different if someone is making a trip to your yard just to deal with your horse, they've got travel time and petrol to consider. I'd do it if you can afford it, we all deserve a lie in if we can get one!

Agree, I think it is a bit much asking someone to do it and then say they have to do it before 9am max! I know i am not at the yard before ten on a weekend, and certainly wouldnt turn someone elses horses out if i was expected to do it on a time limit!

I think that question has already been answered Blucanoo. I think you can ask someone who does this for a living to turn your horse out any time you like, you just have to pay for that.
I think I'm lucky, when I've been on livery yards there has always been an arrangement where the horses all get turned out together, and at a similar time 7 days a week. It must be quite confusing for them when they all go out together in the week, then not at weekends. Or when they go out 3 or more hours later on a Sunday than other days. Do people who go up late arrange for their horses to be fed and hayed and water checked while they wait for their owners to get up?

GRRR! i'm not asking anyone to just do it for me. I am going to advertise for someone freelance to do it and get paid for it. I wanted to know how much I could expect to have to pay. If I was happy with him going out at 9.30 then there would be plenty of people at the yard who would do it for me in return for me doing something for them but I am willing to pay someone and therefore feel I can say my requirements!!!

Thank you Tinypony! Just because I want a lie in doesn't mean my horse wants one! On our yard people come and go and do their horses as they please which works well for me cos of working stupid hours. I also wonder if people make arrangments if they go up later on certain days, i know i would have to otherwise i'd worry.
 
I used to have the same problem, six days a week he was turned out by six in the morning so then i had to do it at that time or maybe an hour later on a Sunday, but if i wanted a lie in no one else would be up the yard until half nine or ten to do theres, i didn't see why he had to stay in longer because i wanted to stay in bed. So i used to turn him out early still then go home and back to bed.
Sometimes i used to bring him in three hours later then normal in the evening so he was still in the stable for the same amount of time.

i've tried going back to bed, doesn't work for me, when i'm up i'm up!!! oh to have a big fatty that lives out!! ha ha
 
I put an add up, detailing requirements, inc that ideally he would be out by 7am and i've had 3 e-mails already! now to find one I like at a price i like!! Thanks!!xx
 
They haven't got the job yet! waiting to hear how far they'd need to travel in order to work out a rate. i'm anticipaiting around the £10 mark, inc travel, anything mroe than that and i may have to kiss my Lie in good bye!!!
