Ok bit of a random question but I would appreciate your input.

Basically how much would you expect to have to pay (or if you are an employer) how much do you/would you pay for this

9 days work (18th-26th)
Daily duties include

8am start -

Bring in on average 15 horses (maybe more or less dependent on weather but average is 15 , oh and the field is a 15 minute walk in total!)

Deliver feed/straw/bedding if its been ordered to clients

Turnout/Muckout/Hay 5 foals and capture them to put them back

Check One donkey in the paddock

Muck out , hay , water another Donkey (with foal at foot) and poultice mares foot and administer medicines.

Sweep both yards and make sure place is clean and tidy
Exercise 1 horse (5 days out of 9) .

Then in the evening ;
Turn horses back out .
Get full. livery's (5 of them) boxes ready for the next day
And top up hay/water etc for Foals and Donkeys.

And over the nine days ; deal with farriers/vets etc when they are there

So ideas?

I would pay an hourly rate - £7/£8 an hour, not sure how many hours that would take, but that is what you would be paid here.

Good luck, that is a lot of work!

Hourly rate of £6-£7 per hour up here - should be more tho with the level of graft involved but that's working with horses for you!

I'd happily work for £6-£7 and hour

I dread to think how much it works out seeing as I am 'doing it as a favour'

All that work as a favour!!! I don't think so ... if you think that it will be to much to charge come up with a daily figure - £20 a day (or more) I wouldn't do all of that for less, if they had to get someone else in they would have to pay a lot more.

If I didn't do it , the yard would become completely DIY and all hell would break loose

I've agreed to do it , and agreed to do it for 'a few pennies'

but I am genuinely interested to see what they would have to pay someone if I didn't do it

Iam a house sitter and charge £35 per day thats looking after the animals whatever they are and house and sleeping over, £35 is if I can do the required amount of work with the animals in 2-3hrs per day. What you have listed would take me 10hrs per day. So I would be looking for £75-£80 per day for all that what you have listed is some serious grafting, and whoever has asked you to do it should be prepared to pay. If you phone up some animal sitting agencies you would be shocked what they charge per day to look after animals.

I get £7 a hour on the yard.

Ishy I do things like that as a 'favour' too!

Sadly YM knows I don't have a life and I'll be around to do it .. I worked it out and I am getting 'payed' the princely sum of £1 an hour (based on doing 6/7hours a day)

Still last time I did it for free

I feel this becoming a good bargaining tool to have some free lessons

Ridiculous - the full liveries will be paying more than that for "services".

I would definitely be getting free lessons - at least 5 in return. After all, if the yard descends into chaos, it is the YO's problem not yours.

good greif ishy get a grip thats pure slave labour, they should at least offer you free stabling feed and everything for doing all that. Steeleydan has the right idea, i actually pay more for a house sitter but the price does cover 24hr pet/horse/house. Would be interested in how old you are actually as i personally could no way do all that in a day

I'm 17. And I've done it before but it was in Feb. when I had up to 10 'full liveries' a day and most of the yard (25 horse yard to turn out). Only did 5 days though and I was knackered by the end of it

works out at £1 an hour - want a job at my yard!

if you have agreed to it you have agreed but i would really try and get more out of it!

I'm not really that bothered about the money (well I will be when the liveries are driving me up the wall and decided to treat me like sh!t!) but I was genuinely interested to see what normal people pay for holiday cover

ah bless your little cotton socks. When we go away on holiday i have to ring the house sitter who would charge the same for a hamster as 15 horses. She charges £60/day. I have in the past had her looking after 3 dogs, 1 fish

and 3 horses, usually its between december-march time so its the winter. Havent you thought about being employed on a yard being as your so kind hearted and obviously love what you are doing? Cant believe someone would let you do all this work for nothing - unless its your parents
wink.gif
Why dont you get in touch with Animal Aunts!!

They aren't my parents sadly (I'd LOVE to live on my yard and i'd accept the slave labour for free livery

)

I am planning on doing yard work for a year (gap between Alevels and UNI) and accept the pay is rubbish .. I think I enjoy mucking out too much

You are a complete and utter mug.

I presume that the YO is getting full livery payment from these people? At ours it is £1.50 to bring in and £1.50 to turn out PER HORSE. Then it is £5 to attend for farrier/vet/etc, muck out is £5 per box, etc, etc, etc.

Next time tell the YO to ask the liveries to go DIY and they can pay YOU DIRECTLY for the favours.

I know I am a mug , honestly.. YM (who has no say in how much I get payed) has been such a big part of getting Sol right (well getting my head right!) I didn't want to say no ..

Shall use your idea in future Weezy
