Just wondering because horses as a norm are so expensive these days (except from the odd bargain you come across) how much you would be willing to pay for a horse?
Obviously all horses are worth different amounts of money.
My mare was £2000 with all tack and everything else you could imagine and I paid £200 for my shetland which was a complete rip off but he was so gorgeous I had to have him! Lol.
I know people who have paid over £5000 for horses that have hardly been handeled, have no papers etc ie I can't see why they are worth that amount!
Anyway just wondering if I'm the only cheapo that shudders when I see the horsey prices out there :) Lol.

Would depend entirely on how much i had. I am hopeful that one day i will be able to afford around 6-7k for a nicely bred arab mare. As it is at the moment and for the next good few years 2k would be about my max, which i don't think would get me what i idealy want- a nice fun little arab who is a good alrounder. So i will stick to sharing for a few years yet i think. If i was ever very well off and had a spare 8k to spend and already had my arab mare i would consider an andalusian as well. Thats dreaming though lol, unless my numbers come up this weekend.

I paid for £5000 for a 12 year old 'been there got the T Shirt' TB that is fab, and to me is well worth the money (no tack), I paid £1800 for a 5 year old pony who is well schooled and very good out on roads just shows 'youngster' behaviour in field and in stable sometimes, that price included tack (crappy tack, had to buy new since) and rugs (all rugs were ok) and again I thought he was a fair price.

I have one which i paid £6,000 for which was a bargain as he is a very good bsja 148 pony and the last one i bought i paid £12,500 for quite a well known bsja pony which then measured too big so now jumps with the horses.

It think it depends on what you want with the horse. Since horse keep is so expensive, and it costs no more to keep quality horse, it does not make that much sense to me to "save" on the initial purchase sum.

If you want to buy a nicely bred well handled youngster from a reputable breeder, it is going to cost... and I guess you could easily pay 5k - but that would probably be for a well handled youngster with great bloodlines and papers. Although you cannot guarantee anything, I reckon you have a higher chance of getting a quality horse with no major issues if you buy it from someone who has already invested in it, even if it ends up costing more.

It sounds a bit weird thought, to pay 5k for something without papers that has not been much handled.

If I really like a horse then I pay whatever the owner/breeder wants for it, maybe a little haggling just for the fun of it but if they dont want to haggle thats fine I will still buy the horse for the full price.

I think my view is warped for a start!
We purchased my mare for £650 at an auction and she has been the most fantastic horse on the whole and worth far more than that when she was younger, she will jump, x country etc, a darling on the whole, with rare moments! She is old and a bit broken so not worth much at all now. She would have been a good £2-3k when younger I reckon.

Thing is I would never want to pay much, certainly never more than £2k. I would prefer to pay £1k and under! Lol, as I am sure we all would.

The type of horse I like can be found cheaper more often, compared to some of these warmbloods/Hanoverians which can be very expensive, beautiful but not my thing at all.
I will be looking to pick up something a year old or less when I can afford to run a second that is, I will be hoping to pick something up for under £500 if I can :D

Oh and just to add, if I had more disposable income then I would spend more, obviously :D

"Realistic" not in that I could go buy one tomorrow (because I physically don't have it in the bank).

But yes, realistic because those are the prices of horses here. If I were to look for another horse now, I would start saving and that would be a reasonable price range. I wish I could spend 80,000 euros on a fabulous horse but sadly I can't.

With 25-30k you can get yourself a rather good youngster (not Bundeschampionat potential, but still, a nice youngster who could potentially go all the way).

When I was funded by the bank of mum and dad, our horses were bought for between £6,000 and £10,000- going back before the recession. Toby cost £10,000 as a 4 year old KWPN with very good breeding was our most expensive. Now I'm having to pay to keep the horses I couldn't afford to buy, well at least not until I get paid more and qualify a chartered psychologist. Once I earn more money I would probably look to buy for around £3000, given I would only want a RC type nothing flashy.

For the right horse I will pay up to £15000 but it would have to be perfect in every way. But should the right one come along for a lot less I would be very happy. However I have been very lucky to inherit some money recently hence the budget!!!!!!

I bought Bear as a 3 yr old for £1200. That was enough!
I like to buy them cheap and un broken and make them worth something!
Between Bear and Gimley they cost me less than 2k to buy, their worth atleast 5k between them now!! ;)
I dont like having horses already broken, they might have issues. Burger was free, this time next year.... Watch this space ;)

Well I paid £2000 for Bodey and Badger was £2500. But realistically for the right horse I would pay up to about £8000, but would have to raid OH’s piggy bank!

Horse prices are inflated in my area, so I would expect to pay $30-$40k for a nice horse, but nothing overly flashly, with potential to do well on the local hunter/jumper circuit.

I met a lady over summer who paid $750 for her three-year-old TB mare, which was destined for meat. A few years on, and the horse has successfully competed on the "A" circuit in Florida, and the lady has had offers of $250k for the horse.

I would prob look around the £8k mark but that would be because I would be specifically looking for something to go and event on, only upto Novice and something that already had shown a reasonable record - and for that £8k is the least I could get away with!
