How much would you pay for an ex-racer?

i personally would pay £0 :p
but hmm, seriously i'd say the horse was worth about £750, depending on this cold backed thing, which would make it worth less.
definitely wouldn't pay as much as £1000 for what you've described! also don't understand why the owner is trying to jump it if it is "very green" in the school!!

Are the £ signs flashing again? Seen another way to make a quick buck?

Is that was GiftedFlame is hoping to do with hers then? She is so lucky to have friends like you to support her especially considering what has happened in the past, you are very forgiving. Not sure I could forgive that easily:rolleyes:

I am surprised Sirena you have not mentioned the price of all the ex racers coming into the UK from Ireland. They can be bought for a mere £4/500 plus £350/400 transport each, oh no I have that wrong people buy them but they belong to your other friend. So they do not count .

I don't understand. Are you all saying that JUST because its a TB its worth less? It seems silly to me. I payed 2k for a 3yo (not TB) the other day, and if I came across a well put together TB with potential to go on to be a great competition horse I do the same. OK exracers can come with qualms (I am currently mid reschooling a 'gifted' one), but if you get a young one or one that has a good temperament you can't go wrong.
I wish people would remove the exracer tag...if the horse in the original post weren't an exracer would it be worth more?
Maybe I am biased as *in my opinion* I am lucky enough to own 2 exracers who are absolute stars!

My dad’s horse, Tully, sounds similar to this one when dad first got him… although he cribs but isn’t cold backed. My friend paid £1000 for him strait from the trainers, she worked at the yard and rode him and apparently he was everyone’s little favourite so maybe she paid a bit more than average. She kept him at ours for a bit and dad decided he wanted him so offered her £1500. So think I’d say £750 to £1500 depending on how nice he is.

I don’t think ex racers are cheap because people don’t like them, it’s just that there are an awful lot of them and they aren’t bred to match demand for riding horses, they are bred to match the demand of the racing industry. Hence they are not as valuable as non TBs.

I have no idea who Gifted Flame is tbh so have no idea what you are talking about

Personally nothing. I have been offered a good few free tbh.

Wintec saddles I don't rate so I would rather get my own tack sorted.

Sorry if that's not what you wanted to hear but they are ten a penny.

I agree. I was Yard Manager at the Thoroughbred Rehab Centre for 7 years and would not touch an ex racer. Sooner or later the horse will have problems due to the fact that it started work at such an early age.

Personally I would look elsewhere.

Good Luck

I have to disagree with Jeni Ball
Ex-racers don't all start work at an early age, especially if they are hurdlers/chasers. Only flat horses start work young in life. And the horses which turn up at your TB rehab centre are only there because nobody else will have them. I have two TBs and personally I wouldn't touch anything else - they are intelligent, beautiful, sensitive creatures - you don't see many other types going to the top in eventing do you? I find that the only people who don't like TBs/ex-racers are those who can't ride sensitively enough or those who are too heavy to ride them. They teach you to ride properly instead of hauling and kicking them like you can get away with with a lot of other breeds. Maybe a lot of people are just too heavy handed to ride TBs properly. I feel insulted by some of the threads on here. There are some breeds that you would have to pay me to take away, but TBs aren't one of them.....

I'm another that disagrees that ex-racers have a 'limited' life. Mine was a failed flatty. He was unraced just too slow on the gallops.

I picked him up for £100 (mind you this was well before ex-racers were desirable like they are now)
He has been the horse of a lifetime. He turns a hoof to anything. He evented to BE novice (and probably would have gone further without wimpy mum on board), dressage, BSJA, hacks for miles....he even won a local handy pony competition :)

I love, love, LOVE ex-racer and I can't see me owning everything else. On the whole they are well mannered, good to box/clip/shoe etc, good in traffic plus you are getting the quality of a well bred thoroughbred.

My girlie sounded exactly like yours when I brought her in Nov. She isnt cold backed but was very thin and she had only been out of racing for 2 months. I payed £1000 for her. I was going to go to the sales to get pne cheaper, but figured it made sense to have one that I could ride and try a bit first so was happy to pay the extra few hundred for that. Shes on the right of my sig (after a good few months work)

I brought her to sell on but shes going nowhere! If I did have to sell her now I wouldnt except less than £5500 for her as think shes going to be a serious contender to do some proper eventing, but only time will tell!!!

sorry if this sounds harsh, but someone would have to pay me to take him on unless he was an absolout star in the making. I have been offered some LOVELY ex race horses in the past for nothing, and they have no quirks/vices what so ever. You just have to do some searching, and you will find some much better offers than that. Call up some local racing yards and see what failed race horses they have, and say that could they keep you in mind if anything comes up. If your prepared to put in the work, then you dont NEED to pay anything :)

Nobody has mentioned breeding!!!!!

My ex-racer has fab paces, goodlooking, temperment to die for AND closely related to a top TB Olympic eventer!

Having said that - I have a friend who has had TB exracers from rehab places and they have been a nightmare both physically and mentally!

You cannot generalise but usually you get what you pay for!
