As above really........

Took on a horse as a 'favour' for a friend. Basically he arrived horrendously lame, in dire need of care and attention. It has been a rollercoaster ride, but at the moment<<<<touch wood>>> he's come sound. It's taken 3 solid weeks of vets visits, drug administration and care to get him to the happy chappy he is.

I have said I'll keep him till February and then he must return home. I have not charged her for this (i have my own land and stables) but she has been liable for all vets bills.

I have today been rung about 2 further horses. One a laminitic pony (numpty owner has just let it gorge) and an ex racer with several abcesses that the owner is struggling with.

I do not have room until Harry goes home in February, but am considering doing some kind of covalesence livery for these people. Obviously word gets around quickly and I do enjoy the caring side to this.

How much would you charge?? I'm in Devon btw so prices for diy is about £20 a week for stable and turnout.

I would charge about £100per week+ as you will have to provide all care and expertise in getting these horses right. I would recomend checking you are insured to offer this service as it is a big responsibility and you don't want to get into any problems if things dont go the right way.

I had to put my horse on convalescence livery for a few months at the start of this year, as she was recovering from surgery and I was quite seriously injured at the time, having been kicked in the head.

They didn't have to administer any veterinary treatment to her, as she was taken to the vets for that, nor was there any bandaging etc, but they kept her on box rest, (shavings and rubber matting) with a tiny amount of turn out per day in the latter weeks. They provided her hay, but I provider the balancer which was the only feed she had aside from a handful of chaff per day. It was full livery & incl. a little grooming and the odd rug change. I paid extra when she had shoes on for a vet check. I paid £70 a week and their care was so comprehensive that I had to do and organise nothing, (thankfully, as I was so unwell) I just visited a couple of times when I was well enough (or not

). I would have most happily paid more if she needed more time per day, such as bandaging/polticing/walking in hand etc

I think this service is greatly needed but please read up carefully and get advice from a solicitor ad you will need hefty insurance to cover you against being sued. I dont mean to be negative but if you are looking after poorly horses - especially laminitics where serious changes can occur overnight - you need to be covered in case things go wrong and the owner tries to blame you.
I do not know what you would charge but my vets charge £20 per day for full livery and vet care/monitoring inc all feed and hay etc.
