A friend is selling their horse - she has owned him for two years, and bought him for all the wrong reasons, mainly because of the person who was selling him. He was vastly overpriced when she bought him - a very novice and green 7yo. He is 9 this year, but they have advertised him as an 8yo (as he was a late foal).

He is a registered Holstein gelding, mediocre breeding but not amazing. 16.2hh. Done lots of PC stuff, and has been on teams, although more often than not is the drop score. He has done a few BE PN events, never going clear - his best score was around 58 - his dressage is normally in the 40s or 50s. He has never completed the XC without timefaults.

He would make a nice RC horse, but is never going to be a world beater. I have spoken to my friend this morning, who is annoyed as she has not had a single call - I told her she needs to halve the price, but she is adiment that he is worth what she is asking. So I just wondered what you lot would pay for such a horse? Then I'll tell you how much she wants (and make sure you are sitting down!)

I would have thought a healthy horse of this size and age, who has been out competing ought to be worth £5k. Even though he has not been really successful, if he is safe, sound and sane, he might do better with better riding and training.

TBH he sounds like Mr Average with no real record of doing anything. Also he is a tad older that a lot of people like. IMO I would say circa £3,000 in the current climate as he is pitched with an awful lot of horses that are similar.

Yes between £4,000 and £4,500 as he has an unproven record except the couple of BE outings which obviously won't reflect well.

Would also depend on whether he has any vices and would pass a 5 stage vetting. If he has vices then he won't be worth more than £1,500 and the same would apply if he won't pass a 5 stage vetting.

I am not sure.

I am paying £3000 (advertised at 3500 without tack, but the sellers are friends), to include tack and rugs, for a registered warmblood, 17.2hh, done some jumping and very very well schooled, but his thing is dressage. He has amazing paces and even more amazing breeding, but as the sellers have not had time to do a lot with him, he's not really got much of a record so hasn't proven himself. Very safe in traffic. The reason he is on the cheaper side is because he has sweet itch, but this, as I have said in another post, could be being controlled more than it is at the moment.

So yeh, I'd probably go with about 4k for this horse.

He has no known vices, the only problem is he has rubbish feet and needs a decent supplement in order to keep shoes on - must be reshod every 4wks. He has passed full 5 stage with xrays, so no problem there though. They aren't selling him with any tack or rugs.

I would guess between £3000 and £5000 depending on a few things - how is he to hack? Especially alone? Easy to do eg travels well etc? And if he took a step back from PN how would he fare eg if he did local unaffiliated eventing, 2'9ish or maybe an intro....If he would be competitive at that level I would err towards £4.5 to £5k, if he is a good horse to hack/have around. However if he is still going to struggle, then the lower end of my suggestion probably?
I would guess though that if a pro took him on, or even a more experienced rider, to do a bit ofwork and sell on and got his flatwork up to scratch (I honestly think even a not-particularly talented horse should be able to do a decent, obedient dresage test at intro/prelim) he would make someone a nice RC allrounder and hence be worth more.....

4K -5K But whether she'll get that going into winter i dont know. She should take him out hunting and advertise him as a good hunt horse as they are worth theyr weight in gold!

OK, will reveal all - they are trying to sell him for 9k - having spoken to her this morning, she is thinking of increasing to 12k as she has heard that upping the price means you can get more calls......

He is a nice, safe horse, but talent wise he will never do more than RC. He would be a fantastic RC horse with the right rider, that just wanted to have fun.

Realistically, as he is safe and not to old, i would say around £5,000. Let her advertise him for more, she will just make herself look a fool!

For a horse that completes PN, you say always time faults, fair enough, but not jumping faults? You don't really mention if he is honest or not as this plays a huge part.
If he's honest, even with crap dressage, and does PN easily enough with 'potential' to do novice, and does all PC activities reasonably enough I wouldn't be surprised at finding someone to pay 6-7K for him.

For a really safe rc horse, schoolmaster type that will get a not-so-cmpetant rider round a 3'0 SJ and a 2'9 XC and is easy to do/good to hack, I know many people who would/have paid £5k! But £9k or even £12k, not going to happen I'm afraid!
ALs depends where you are - we are close to london in an expensive area so prices round here probably higher than elsewhere!

Re BE scores - he has had XC jump fauls (refusals) on all but one round. Always has min of 8 faults on SJ phase too.

He is a nice horse to have around, he would definately not go up to Novice, not safely anyway, lol.

I was just interested, as I thought I had misread the ad, lol, and then thought that I obviously do not know the value of horses - I had said ideally he would sell for around 4.5k, but that is a lot less than they originally paid for him. TBH they were done, they bought him because of the chap that rode him previously, but for that rider to have a 7yo and never take it BE, something had to be up, surely....

If he's a friendly sort and good load shoe box clip etc then I'd say £5k possibly going up to her £9k depending on how good his flatwork is and just how easy he is to do.
There's a definite market for good easy horses that you can just take out where ever to what ever you want know they will behave.
But I may be on the wrong track there.
