a 15 year old registered highland pony with reasonable conformation - not amazing, just ok. Pony is a saint, complete novice ride but has SI and also is a bit stiff with arthritis. Not much seems to be selling just now down our way but i dont want to make too cheeky an offer.

I'd pay £1k that type often have arthritis, esp by that age with a working life. As long as the pony doesn't require medication and the SI is mild and easily controlled, at 15 there's plenty of use left!

as long as the pony really is a saint and you (and whoever else will be riding) do not want to do more than the arthritis allows than I would be happy to pay between 1000 and 1500 as long as everything else is ok and the si is managable. basically what value do you put on your safety and ebjoyment?

Me too. Even if the arthritis doesn't need medicating now, it might do very soon, and then you have SI to deal with on top of that. If I was the owner, I'd just be happy to find it a good home with someone willing to take on those medical issues.

A saint of a horse is worth its weight in gold so you need to deduct from that the inconvenience of keeping it rugged and using a feed supplement or medication to deal with the arthritis. What price safety. My diddy highland is 21 and still winning in the show ring ridden and in hand

You have to be prepared to pay the asking price ultimately. But always go in asking if they'd take an offer. So if it's advertised at 1500, offer 1200. If it's on for 1000 offer 700.
