I went to a charity auction thing last night and this was one of the things up for grabs... I had to stop my OH bidding for it though because I didn't qualify for the lessons (had to be currently competing at Novice BE level and horse had to have done two Novice BE competitions already)

What do you reckon it went for?

He's an excepotionally good trainer, whatever anyone may feel about him as a person!!

You can have lessons with him through the TTT for £45 (about that anyway) twice a year, I go and always gain a lot from it. I wouldnt pay above the normal level though- maybe £60 tops for individual tuition.

The restrictions seem odd- he's quite happy to help you if you arent novice level.....

He'd have to pay me....and prove he knew something about SJ'ing...

Quite frankly wouldn't waste my time OR my money

Have you ever seen him teach?

I know... I thought that - think it really restricted the bidding... OH didn't realise that I wasn't at that level cos he thought he had heard me say something about Novice (Bless him

)

Anyway - interesting what people will pay for charity

It went for £600

Lucky charity!!

Whatever you may think of him for the AT thing, he's been there and done it so has a wealth of experience to pass on. If I was ever at any stage able to take advantage of that, I would like a shot. I personally think you'd be stupid to pass up on that if you had the opportunity if it was the discipline you were interested in. Also, don't forget, he had a successful time competing some of Trevor Banks' Grade A's for a couple of seasons so not completely without knowledge of SJ although I admit, courses have changed a good bit since then.

Being a charity auction, the sky's the limit, that's the way of them, even silly things like a brace of pheasants go for £20+ and around here we wall to wall with them and can get them for a pound! It's all about people 'doing' as in dipping hand in pocket something for which they believe in. It wouldn't surprise me if it made around the £200 mark.

Well, I was a bit out then! As Boss said, very lucky charity, bet they're pleased!

I expect they were

It was a fairly big charity, and there were some big donations (I went cos my dad is involved in the charity).

I still would have liked to have had the riding lessons - but £600 is a bit over budget anyway

and the charity certainly deserved it.

he's high on the list of trainers i'd want to have a session with, so quite a lot, i think. not £600 though.
i think his support of her was deplorable, but that does not detract from the fact that he is a master horseman.. even if he gets it a bit wrong in his xc course design occasionally!

Thank you Boss! Some of those comments had been making my blood boil! I've had the odd lesson with him as 200 metres away from me, and I have to say its fascinating. He is one of the top and most experienced trainers in the world!! Grrrrr.

Perhaps you could come to an informed opinion once you have heard his training on the riders seat. He never misses a single trick.

Youre absolutely right about him not missing a trick- you think he's only half focusing on you and then he can predict exactly what leg you broke and where and tyell you how it affects your riding!
He's got such a brilliant eye.

Sounds impressive !

But how come he couldn't spot a lame horse running on three legs

Sorry, but he could be the best trainer in the world for all I care...but he lost all credibility with me when he defended the indefensible in H&H over the AT affair...

£600!! Sounds like the charity bash was a success.

I actually really like Mark; he has such a terrific sense of humour and is a genuinely nice, knowledgeable and competent horseman.

Totally agree.

Regardless of the 'issues' mentioned, he is a very knowledgeable horseman. I met him several times in the 70's and competed (SJ) against him at Royal Windsor one year, so I can attest to his skills as a showjumper, and I believe he was and still is well respected in equestrian circles. Good on him for raising money for Charity...

However I was told a good story that at Sandhurst RMA during his military training, his knickname was 'Foggy', as people thought he was Thick and Wet !! Make your own mind up...

I had a lesson with him and I am certainly not Novice level..... I found him to be very helpful and gained immensly from my time with him. But that could be because I am not Novice!!
