Friends daughter wants to earn some Christmas money. She’s 12. I said she could clean my two saddles and two bridles. They are not dirty. Just need wipe down with damp cloth. Dried. And leather balm rubbed in. Mum asking how much I would pay. I can provide the leather balm. I can do then myself but thought I’d help her out. My dilemma is what shall I offer. I could do both saddles plus bridles under an hour. Would 10 pounds be too rude ? I only earn that amount myself as a cleaner so can’t afford much more.

If you want to give her the money as a friend then I'd say £10 is plenty. It would have been better if they'd come up with a price list before asking you!

This is what local girl charges (but it's all taken apart and done really well) although £2 for a synthetic girth is steep and I have no idea what a Numhana :p is! I think £10 is good.

PRICES
Saddle £8.00 inc leathers
Bridle £10.00 inc martingale
Double bridle £12.00
Martingale £3.00
Breastplate £4.00
Stirrup leathers £3.00
Girth (leather ) £3.00
Girth (synthetic) £2.00
Numhana £3.00
Travel boots £5.00
Boots (horse) 3.00
All top quality products used (safecare)
Cleaned and leather conditioned.

Thank you. Although at those prices it would cost me a fortune. It’s a hard one as don’t want to offend. But I’m not rolling in money myself.

£10 is generous. That would be an hourly rate for a freelance doing other things also. For a 12 year old earning pocket money I'd say £5 an hour is fine although it may well take her over an hour to do this if she isn't used to cleaning tack. My daughter was very pleased to work at a local stables for a few hours on the odd weekend morning for that at that age. Especially if you are dropping off and collecting the tack as well.

Depends - if she's horsey and competent and will reassemble as it was, and do a good job, I'd probably pay £15 for two bridles (if they have nosebands / martingales etc) and two saddles/leathers/ girths, or £10 for half bridles and saddles (with no girths to clean, stirrup irons not muddy etc). If not horsey and learning on the job, I'd pay less and expect to reassemble and check before use.

Although my tack is generally horrendously muddy from winter hacking, so I'd probably end up paying more as an apology for their suffering...
