Sorry - it's another 'How much' post!! I am not actually planning on selling my horse now, but in a year or so. But as I bought him for a price he was clearly not worth as he was from my riding instructor, I have always been very interested to find out how much he's be worth, roughly?
So any ideas would be greatly appreciated!!

15.2hh Thoroughbred gelding, 13 years old but still plenty of energy! Gorgous looking flea-bitten grey with silver mane and tail. Ex-racer but has been re-schooled fantastically and you would not know he was a racer. Is good to shoe, clip, catch, load etc. Has no vices except he does not like you pulling his mane so needs twich, and pulls faces in his stable (due to being badly treated in his racing days) but does not bite/kick. Currently stabled most of the day and night, turned out in the mornings but previously (I'm at Uni right now) lived out 24/7. BSJA winnings of over £250; jumps Discovery/Newcomers and schools over anything between 1m-1m40, many wins in unaff. dressage prelim and Novice, could easily go higher in dressage and affiliate as he has fantastic paces. Has been hunted and gone Cross-Country over 1m10 solid fences, could go higher but I dont have a lot of opportunity to take him out. Is good with other horses and to hack alone. Lovely, lovely horse.

Thanks

I am no good at prices but I would say he is worth quite a bit. Some people would say less because of his age, but in my opinion 13 is nothing really so should not alter his value too much, especially as he is such a fantastic horse.

I'd say £3500-£4000 depending, and that value could be less if you sell him at 14.

He sounds fab, but although age doesn't matter to me, I found when selling that a lot of people write off anything over 10 so it could make it difficult to get a high price.

Really?! I have always wondered what I will get for him, although I am not very much interested in the money as he wasn't that expensive to buy and I'll only keep profit - my parents bought me him! I was thinking more £5k min. as although he would be older next year, he could have another £100+ BSJA as I've only had him 1 year and he's got a little over £250. My guess at £5k is purely comparing similar horses in the back of various H&H magazines though!!

Thanks for your reply though

I would agree with your 5k minimum. Its not often you come by a horse like that and I would easily part with 5k (if I had it that is) for a horse like yours. At 13 he still has plenty of years left in him, I still consider 13 young, some horses are sill competing in their 20's.

As I say, thats going just off my gut feeling - I would agree that 5k is a good price but a lot of people seem to knock 2k off a horse the minute it gets over the age of 12....

There was a how much the other day about a similar horse aged 16 and most replies valued at under 2000.

I am sure you could get 5k, particularly if you did a lot more competing with him and he's consistently getting double clears - its a question of finding the right person thats all.

A lot of horses are advertised at a huge amount but unfortunately they don't always make they prices you see.

I would say 3.5k.
You'd seriously struggle to get more than that for a 14yr old with a pretty average comp record. He sounds nice though.

Thanks everyone!! I completely understand how some people refused to pay a lot for a horse just because they are over 12, and they go for pennies just because they reach 16!! It's quite a shame. I am going to keep competing him bsja, build up his dressage, might even affiliate, and do more cross-country with him. Then hopefully when time does come to pass him on

the new buyers will realise that he still acts like an 8year old, even though he's older and wiser, and pay for him what he deserves.
