do childrens riding lessons cost? MY mothers friends grandaughter has been given a course of lessons at a very 'iffy' yard near my hometown. I remember being gobsmacked last spring when I passed it on my way into Glasgow-far too many equines on far too little land, old baths for waterers, barbed wire fencing hanging in loops and [****] everywhere. Anyway, 8 year old pony mad girl having lessons at £25 an hour. The hours lesson (group) is 30 mins in the saddle and the other 30 (plus) mucking out, cleaning tack and poo picking

Am I right in being

? I googled said RS and it is not on the BHS list. I then found another near by which is approved and 45 mins group lesson costs £19. The first RS provides boots and hats, the BHS one doesnt. Ive said to buy own hat etc . Is this a rip off or is this normal? Ive been away for so long that I havent got a clue as to what is the norm. Thanks, Mairi.

As far as i know, not sure about tup norrrf but down south here riding lessons are anything between £20-£40 for anywhere between 1/2, 3/4 hours and an hour for a group, all in saddle, extra for hat hire, about a pound for an hour i think and it is hard to find a clean BHS well kept stable that isnt booked up or very VERY expensive, the cost of keeping horses and having insurance is just so high these days

just because a RS isn't BHS approved doesn't mean its rubbish! just a point! do whatever you think is best, your the only one that knows what you want!

it does mean that they might not be able to provide proper instructors and be insured though - I'd be worried about using anything other than the real deal. The BHS have the approved schools jumping so many hoops that it can seem daft but accidents will happen with horses whatever and I wouldnt risk my child with some one who for all intents and purposes could know no more than joe bloggs on the street.

I have to say, I would expect to pay £25 for an hours riding lesson. Whilst half an hour muckingout etc could be considered invaluable stable managment experience and the chance to teach a child that horses are more than just the riding, it could also be considered slave labour!
I would say though, I would be much more worried about the barbed wire and tiny fields!
I have ridden at non-BHS approved schools before and some were fantastic, but that was because it was more of a large group hack along lots of fields, it didn't pretend it was going to make us all the next WFPs and Pippa Funnels of this world! lol
I would just have a look at both, see what makes both mum and child happy. It can't hurt to try before you commit!

thankyou for your replies

. The mum is going to have a look at the BHS approved place and decide where to send her daughter. I agree that just because it isnt BHS approved it isnt worth going to but overhorsing the fields and having dangerous fencing would be enough to put me off from sending my young child. The basics are very important and are usually a reflection of what the soul is all about. Again, thanks. Mairi.

I pay £15 for an hours lesson for my daughter. She is in the saddle for the hour. The stables/fields etc are immaculate, the lessons are in a recently built indoor school. There are never more than 10 per group, infact the group she is in now only has 5 riders in it. There is a long waiting list for places but the group are kept reasonably small and each child gets their fare share of instruction.

From the answers above it seems we are very lucky to have such a great riding centre nearby.
