Would really appreciate you guys help on this. I wanted to get your opinions on what my boy would be worth if I had to sell him on. Can't go into it at the moment but there's a possibility that I may have to.

By the time he is sold (if it comes to it) he'll be sold as:

16.1 Liver Chestnut Irish TB (no papers)
8 Years old
Gelding
Well schooled
Good on roads
Good to shoe
Good to box
With all tack and rugs (inc. brand new barnsby saddle and bridle)
Err blind in one eye (although makes no difference to him, fully adjusted!)

I'm guessing not alot due to his eye issue but hoping the fact that he's a safe hack will make him worth something?

Hopefully it won't come to it but I have to explore the options

Thanks guys xx

Mmmm its a tough one as I've not got anything to compare him to regarding the eye. £1500-2k??

That's what I thought inc. his tack - he's got a pretty extensive wardrobe!

Such a horrible decision but I have to be ready to make it if I need to.

I'd have to share a horse instead for a couple of years as I really don't want to give up riding!

To give you an idea we sold my ex-racer, similar nature to Ty, blind in one eye, but 15 yrs old for £500.
Personally I would pay max £1k for him, plus extra for tack and rugs (maybe £500).

I agree with Claire - I would say around the £2k mark - without tack etc.

If I were selling I would also include in the advert that all his tack etc. is available by negotiation.

Very tricky one.........would he pass a vetting with that eye.......£3000! to include his tack TBH it's a difficult one.

If the eye was declared surely the vetting would pass on everything but - the buyer would then have to produce that to the insurer - I've had no trouble insuring him with it.

I've got the original vetting certificate and it was only done in July last year so would obviously pass that to any potential buyer.

Vicjp - your thoughts.....be honest, I can take it!

I'm hoping everything will work out ok but I really have to be brutally honest and atleast prepare for the worst - if it doesn't happen - happy days!! x

Regarding the vetting - mine failed 2 vettings due to his eye (we only found out about his cataract during the first vetting - and that was done by my vet!). That was for hacking purposes rather than competing, which is why we sold him for so little in the end.

but the eye (or lack of sight in it) causes him no problems so we'll have to see.

It's a money issue, not time

You are keeping him at an extremely expensive yard by the sounds of it though. Can you not find cheaper options like DIY??

I suppose it is time aswell - summer is fine (especially if I sort out a sharer) but the winters will be a nightmare.

Also, looks like I may have to go up to the city again to work which would make it all a bit of a nightmare.

Anyway, early days yet but I'm just being practicle and looking at all my options xx

Well there is a horse at our yard with only one eye (the other was removed) but because he is such a schoolmaster on the flat he is worth 1.5k-2k

I wouldn't write good to shoe as you've only just managed to shoe him without sedation for the first time

But I wouldn't be looking to sell until the summer - and he should be ok by then.....obviously wouldn't put it if he wasn't but think we're on the right track now
