Hi Everyone

How much hay daily should a 390kg wlesh section D X Andalusian (PRE) Be getting ?

With only a handful of chaff twice a day for supplements and on pretty poor grazing.

I personally would put a large bag full/wheelbarrow full in then if loads is left, give less the next day, i always think that they should have a handful left over in the morning/at the end of the day.

She's in a night out in the day not everyday but most days

My problem is that, is she will finish 2 sections in under a hour probably half an hour

See I have tried this but iv'e been giving her alot way more than some bigger horses on my yard and there's still none left She's doesn't need any weight or anything but it seems unfiar to leave her all night with no hay.

I forgot to mention she's also having about 2 sections in the field to help out with the no grazing she just seeems hungry even when i have given her loads

There is a very greedy section D on my livery yard and we have started double netting with haylage nets. Small holes made even smaller. It took him 20 minutes to stop being grumpy at not being able to get a big mouthful, but it means it lasts well through the night so he isn't in with an empty stomach causing him issues.

I have a trickle net and have just bought a shires net with simliar size holes to put next to it to see if having more haynet stops her habit of pulling at the haynet getting a bit not even chewing it but grabbing another bit until she has a good mouth full then chewing. I have also tried big holed nets which she just pulls the hay out of a drops on the floor and then won't eat it.

I was feeding my 13.2 the same amount of hay as my 16.3, and both were happy, keeping on weight and everything, just the 13.2 is very greedy, i did give him a salt lick and he started eating less, so i think he was eating because there wasn't anything else to do, but i've always been taught that they should have as much as they want to eat (providing of course it doesn't send them loopy or make them obese) because in the wild they're trickle feeders. But i suppose it depends on the horse, they're tricky animals haha

Thank you she has a salt lick and a Lickit boredom breaker which i think might the night more interesting. It's just hard to get the balance right thank you for advice

2% of body weight per day is recommended. So 390kg is 7.8kg of dry weight of forage. Aim for 8kg split into two 4kg nets and this should allow for any wastage falling to the ground.

I'd double net the hay if she's stabled- long periods without anything is a risk for colic etc.
You could mix some straw in to the ration to bulk it out.
