Hi,

Ive had my sec D foal about a month now, and on tuesday he got cast in his stable.

He is on part livery and the YO managed to get him up - he wee'd straight away and we guess he had been there a while - luckily he didnt struggle.

We had the vet and he had some anti Inflam & Pain relief, because his stifle upper leg was HUGE!!!!! now due to the pressure his skin cracked and today the skin has come away from the flesh (obviously dead from the amount of swelling)

so we are now left with a fist sized area below his stifle that is just neat flesh - and of course im worried about infection/scarring. Any suggestions what to use ? I was looking at camrosa but read too many bad reviews.
Of course i have all the usual First aid stuff, and the vet said to keep it clean and thats about it. I might get some Vit E oil for when its re-growing, currently it is still pink, fleshy and a bit bloody. but its on his joint so difficult to know what to put on - dose it need to dry out, or keep it supple?

Hes been a very good foal, i think he was very very sore though , a few times he has been laid down and we have had to help him back up again, his back is really sore! along with his leg so when he lays on one side he cant get himself up :(

We were looking forward to showing him this winter but looks like we will have to wait.

Our 2yo had a horrendous skin flap to the side of his neck about 4 weeks ago - you could stick your fingers right into it and it needed 7 stitches to close it. God knows how he managed it. The wound broke down and he would not tolerate any dressings on it, he just rubbed them off. He lives out and we were very worried. The vet came back and took the stitches out after 5 days as it was swollen and weeping. We simply packed it with flamazine twice a day - it has completely healed with no scar. It might be worth trying. Otherwise what about manuka honey.

From what I've just read vitamin E can make things worse!

Massage to prevent/breakdown collagen formation seems recommended along with good wound care.

one of my ponies had the biggest hole in her shoulder you've ever seen and i put honey on it twice a day and a good clean before hand and there was no scar there once healed! you would never know it even happened, honey is an amazing thing! and cheap too :D

Manuka honey! You can get it from the supermarket :)

If you are using honey it MUST BE 'Active MAnuka Honey' the higher the rating the more healing properties it has.

The photos below are of a friends horse, the 1st the original injury before the vet stitched it, the 2nd a couple of days later after the stitches had popped and finally 5 weeks after the original injury and he was back in work.

My friends horse bolted whilst tied up by the farrier with her lead rope to a rope connected to two wooden posts (the perils of NOT using bailing twine). She bolted about half a mile smashing dragging the posts either side of her, straight through a wooden five bar gate and menage fence before coming to rest in the field almost in a state of collapse totally exhausted with the skin from her chest hanging down by her knees and a massive hole in her chest. Everyone thought it would be a pts job but the vet was extremely confident that she would be okay (I think most of us thought he was mental at the time - lol).It was stapled up and unbelievably the vet told her she had to ride her a few days later to use the chest muscles to promote the healing process. Four months on you had to look really closely to see the scar.

Amazingly huge great wounds heal much quicker and easier than a small pin prick puncture wound which can be deadly within a matter of hours due to the bacteria.
