How often can you bath a dog?

Our dog is getting quite smelly (had him two weeks now) - his is 13 years old. I bought things that basically look like giant baby wipes to rub him down with that help a bit but I was thinking when the weather is warm a shower would do the job better. However, I seem to remember that they shouldn't be bathed too often and was wondering whether I should save the washing for occasions when he really smells or I need him to be clean (visiting relatives?).

Thank you if anyone can advise

Mine gets sprayed with the hose every time he rolls in poop!!! (he doesnt like it but STILL doesnt deter him from it! grrr!)

He gets a shower after a REALLY smelly adventure!

the other week he got 3 baths/hoses in 24hrs! but this was a one off occassion!

yes in theory as little as possible as it takes the oils etc out of their coat (I think this is correct) and being old I think its kind of normal for older dogs to get slightly stinkier! But if he gets bad, one bath is not going to kill him!

I know top show groomers that bathe their show dogs every three days. I know some folk who don't wash their dogs but maybe once or twice a year. If the dog is living out doors in a kennel, I wouldn't want to wash the oils out of his coat too often - but if he lives mostly in then wash away.

I groom lots of dogs that get a bath monthly, whether they need a hair cut or not - no issues with skin or coat so long as you use a good product on it and if necessary, condition it.

I'd been washing the boy twice a week with Masuleb as he has been getting allergies/skin infections but I'd rather not at all.

They are in and out of the river so much and they live outside so I don't see the need.

One of mine gets a warm shower everyday because he goes in the stinkpot mud swamps.
Another of mine is about 3 times a week because he has to have his skin treated with special shampoo.

My dog gets a bath on average once a week although obviously if she has rolled in something or gets very muddy out on walks it can be more often .

When she just needs a 'freshen up ' between baths i give her a brush and baby wipe her paws , nose and bum :P

It's not a huge problem if your dog is living indoors with you. If kennelled outdoors then i'd possibly be more reluctant. I bath mine a bit more during the summer (monthly) but not so much in the winter. However, there're certains situations that call for a bath no matter the season!!!!!!

I bath my JRT when he gets really smelly, probably this is about once a month.
He jumps in the bath when I ask him too even if the hubby is in there and he loves the hairdryer afterward.
When the weather is warmer I resort to the yard hose for a quick sloosh down of obnoxious substances.

I have found a great way to get him smelling nice is to give him a rub down when he gets back from walks with a flannel dipped in antibacterial hand wash and really hot water squeezed out and rubbed all over several times. Its a bit like the Dettol bath I do on the horse.
Then a quick towel dry and he is lovely and sweet smelling again.
