How often do you check your horse on grass livery

My yard has just stopped doing services and my horse currently lives out and I wondered how often people check their horse.
I was trying to set up a rota so we looked at them in the morning before work but no one else is interested and was just going to see them once a day, but i am not sure if this is enough, what does everyone else do?
 
We're lucky that ours are at the end of the garden, so we can glance out and check in the morning - just to check nothing stuck in fences or anything.. Then we catch them once a day and check them properly - and fill water tubs etc..
 
PS. Even when we had DIYs and did no services, I would always check to see they were "all there and had 4 legs each" every morning - surely your yard would do that?? So really once a day is enough..
 
So they dont check their horses in the morning?

What if one has had colic overnight, or got stuck in the fence, or choked, or got a wound?

Mine are out 24/7, the lady at the farm checks them all day (she doesnt work) and I still check them twice a day (plus work 12 hour shifts)

Def twice a day for me.....oooooh eeeerrr
 
There are only 4 of us left on yard as everyone left due no services now. One girl we have not seen for months and relies on everyone checking hers but the others a gonna leave them out and really object to coming down in the morning, its madness. I know I will have to go once sept comes as my job involves travelling and if they wont do twice a day then I wont rest but currently they are all saying once after work is enough.
 
always check mine at least 3 x day but they are at home and one of themovernight still managed to push a couple os staples out and get in with neighbours horses que insurance claim.,so assoon as you turn back they could act it.
 
Twice a day, shared between myself, my daughter and friend we share yard with. All out 24/7.
Can you pay someone to check yours in the mornings when you are not around? We have freelance grooms around here and I would definitely use one if needed for peace of mind.
 
Iam going to check mine and leave the others to it and in the meantime look around for another yard. I cant believe they are happy to just leave theirs for so long.
 
i go daily but the yos wife doesnt work and walks her dogs 4 times a day and checks as she passes, plus al teh liveries are diy and we all go up at different times and keep an eye on all the horses when we go - i reckon an hour wont go past before the horses are seen by someone x
 
I check mine one a day, but YO checks over the herd every morning as she drives the permieter fence every day & she always makes sure nothing untoward had happened over night and will call/bring in if she has a suspicion/.
 
Our yard doesn't do any sort of formal checking daily in the summer when most horses are out 24/7 so you rely on other owners going to get their horse in and out of field to spot if something is wrong though they're in 2 big fields and if they're way over the back a horse with a problem might spotted until later in the day as some people only check their horse once a day. Mine's in overnight so he's seen twice a day but if I'm on holiday and he's out 24/7 for a week or so I get him checked once a day by someone. It's a bit different in the winter as they're in field right by the YO's house and she and or sometimes her neighbours along the road spot things.
 
I have my own land and stables,but it is a short drive from my house. I don't do anything until I've at least done a driveby every morning.....to check all standing. I then go up later in day and bring in/work them/feed/groom etc. So I am there at least twice daily.....even if I don't bring in,I always go up twice. On the odd occasion,I have only gone up once,but I do tend to worry if I haven't seen them.....anything can happen!!

If I can't get there for some reason,then I pay someone else too....even if its just a quick check and poo pick....its worth £6 an hour for my piece of mind :)
 
The yard I was on before my last yard. One girl left it days between checking her pony. I used to make sure it was ok. But think going out partying was her main priority.
 
Mines on grass livery but at a big yard where he is checked on constantly. If not i'd want to see him myself at least in the morning & again in the afternoon.

I go up every day and bring him in for a check over / groom / feed if i'm not riding, and if I can't my friend does.


I think moving yards is a good idea for you!
 
My girl is out 24/7 at the moment. I usually check her twice a day, in the morning, if i have work, i just make sure she is standing and still has all 4 legs, in the afternoon/evening i will bring her in and give her a good check. If for any reason i'm not able to get down there i will either arrange with another livery to check her or ask the YO. All the liveries go down at different times of trhe day so there usually always someone ther eand we keep an eye out for each other.
 
The YO check them all in the morning. Just a visual check - counts heads and legs and makes sure no one is stuck in the fence. The fields are in the village and people walk past them and through them all the time and will speak up if they see a horse in trouble. People are also in and out all day catching their own etc. With all that in mind I do a daily check. I wouldn't miss a day though and she's fully inspected.

Private yard I occasionally work at is very private and the on site equines are ownded by one person. If she's away (that's when I work there) then they are given 4 seperate checks per day.
