How often do you get your horse shod?

Josh my old horse was shod every 4 weeks without fail, he was a Selle Francais and his feet were rubbish!

Bob (new horse) seems to have slightly better feet despite being a TB, so is on 5 weeks at the moment possibly increasing to 6 weekly intervals when I have owned him a bit longer and can see how his feet hold up. His last owner assured me that he goes 6-8 weeks between shoeing - but then she also seems to have left an ongoing back/neck problem untreated for quite some time

horses should be shod every 4 to 6 weeks. leaving it longer than that is causing excess pressure on the tendons ligaments and joints so shortening the horses life.

Given that their feet all grow at different rates thats an odd thing to say

. Mine has been shod every 8, 9 or 10 weeks for at least the last 11 years and he's never had tendon/ligament problems. Oh, and he's 26.

Probably accademic adding any more posts lol, but mine are roughly six weeks - depends on amount of foot growth and amount of work and surface worked on. We go by what the farrier says and when he can get to us. If a shoe comes off (a rare occurance) then we don't ride until Mark can get over to replace it.

silly question probably. The wild ponies on the moors and in the new forest are they brought in every 5-6 weeks to have their feet done?

. Who really says horses have to have their feet done 5-6 weeks. The farrier cos thats where they make there money isn't it.

When ever her feet are looking long or the shoes are worn down. Sometimes she will only go about 4 weeks other times she will go about 8 weeks. Depends on the time of the year and the amount of work she has done

Lol. My cynical side agrees, but when we've gone longer, for whatever reason, the shoes start to sound lose and the toes look too long. Daughter's cob is shoeless due to having scrummy lovely feet that seem to only need a trim every eight to ten weeks, but they get a tittyvate every time the others are done otherwise we wouldn't know whether we were coming or going on appointments

Currently 5 - 7 weeks depending on wear. At one point mare only just made 3 1/2 weeks on hinds due to arthritic changes in hock causing lots of wear on hind shoe toe. Before i controlled shoeing frequency, she went 13 weeks once and shoes still weren't loose

Every 5 weeks exactly. I book my farrier a year in advance!

Back in the 1980's used to leave the shoes on for how ever long they hung on for! 10 - 12 weeks at a time, I am embarrassed to admit. I was a kid then and my parents were 100% non-horsey. I know better now

I am lucky enough to have my farrier visit my yard every week, so after 6 weeks he checks my horses feet and if they look ready they are done, but if he thinks they could do with a week or two then he does them then.
My TB is usually every 6 weeks without fail, and my ID usually is every 8weeks as her grow quite slowly.
