My horse just went to his new loan home today, he settled in straight away and i am kind of missing him

but i know i have done the right thing as he wasn't getting ridden and hes only 6 so now he is having a new job of doing a bit of everything.
it is my first time loaning and i have a contract written and signed and i went and delivered him today and have seen where he is and i had a written reference, but what i am wanting to know is how often would you go and visit him as i want to make sure he is getting looked after but don't want to become a pain if you know what i mean!?!

After a bad loan experience where my mare was neglected i would want to see her once every fortnight at least, bearing in mind i used to visit every 4-6weeks before, i simply don't think that is enough sometimes. I would not want to hassle to said loaner, so would happily do a quick visit to the yard when they are not there, but it would have to be twice a month for me

Having also had a bad experience I would now say within the first week, then after another week and if you're happy stretch it out to a fortnight then monthly and so on. If the loanee is a decent person they will understand your concern.

if the loaner is looking after the horse properly they wont have a problem with you visiting as often as you want, as they wont have anything to hide. + there wouldnt be any need for the loaner to be there at the time, mayb just every now + then so you can discuss how the horse is getting on.

Up until quite recently we have had 2 ponies out on loan, one was pts about 2 months ago due to a ruptured tendon

We have a written and signed contract, written references, and ask for them to be kept within the pony club that we used to be in.

This way we hear about how they are, what they are doing etc without having to interfere. The loaners have always said we're welcome to visit anytime, but we've tried to keep it to Christmas (under the guise of dropping off a card

) and a couple of other times a year... Also when the pony goes to a new home we go and visit the home before the pony moves there.

Used to see mine about once every 3 months, more if needed. He was out on loan for nearly 2 years, in fact until the loaners bought him in June. I saw him more often to begin with but I trusted them implicitly and just knew they were looking after him. The loaner is a friend on FB, they emailed me regularly, text/phoned regularly, sent pics, so I never felt out of touch.

My current boy is on loan to me and his owners have seen him once since last August...

The lady who owns my older horse never comes to visit us! She hasn't seen him for 8 months. But then again I used to work for her and now stable him only 10 mins away from her yard and I see her quite regularly as I work in the same village that she lives in.
If I ever loan out either of my horses I would visit quite often to begin with, definately within the first week. Like everyone says if they are looking after the horse properly they shouldn't have a problem with you visiting. Good luck

Thanks i have just been told he is well settled i can't believe how much i miss him didn't think i was too attached to him but nevermind, think i will go back and see him in a couple of weeks and then just go every month don't want to lose contact with him if you know what i meen i want them to know i will be keeping my eye on him its only for 12 months anyway, but they were really excited about getting himetc so hopefully it will all be ok and easy

One of mine is a loan horse. Had him about 8 years, but nobody has ever come to visit him yet, or phoned come to that. Bless him I think they were glad to see the back of him lol.

Maybe visit a little more often than that

I have one out on loan, I dont go see her every week, but I do try to go as often as possible. I keep in contact with the 'loanee' via telephone, email etc! Just to make sure everything is OK!

I see mine about once a month, but he's with a good friend who I speak to about other stuff anyway and sometimes go and compete with. I get phone calls if he is ever unwell etc. straight away and get sent photos/videos all the time.
