If by 'lunge', you mean 'bucking and running round blindly while the owner constantly reassures herself that this is groundwork whilst noticing how closely her pony's frogs are up to her face' then yes, about once a month.

In the winter twice a week, well when the school's not flooded! He sees trolls in the fields and spiny around the school when it's dark he's worse, so I can get more work out of him in 30 mins on the lunge than trying to ride him, he seems to quite enjoy it, has the odd bronco. In the summer maybe once a week.

My horse is certainly not enthusiastic on the lunge so at the moment only when I can be bothered to convince her (its too wet anyway), I actually quite like it but keep sessions to ten mins each side or so.

It makes me too dizzy, I hate it!

This previously :o

Yeah not looking forward to this with the new mare :p

The 19 year old once a week usually.
The 5 year old, just now and then when I cant be bothered to ride. He is usually pretty lazy so a pain to keep going. He usually perks up a bit when I introduce raised poles though.

Never with my old beastie in UK - he would lunge without lungeline - free schooling you may say? :p
He stayed within 20 metre circumfrance around me - bless him :)

Since then every now and again...

Found out new issue with new pony so now going to start once a week minimum and build it up...introduce poles etc

Im not so sure how his joints will take it also combined with hard ground here but we will see!

Do tell? :D It looks good!

It is very good, just a fantastic bit of kit for getting the horse to go properly :) Physio saw vast improvements in my mare within just 3 weeks, which reminds me I need to lunge her in it again soon! :p If i didnt have the Ami I wouldn't lunge as she wouldn't be working properly she would be 'dossing' :D

What do you mean?!! We always look the picture of control and professionalism when lunging our two perfectly behaved beasts.

Particularly with the voice commands - "Steady, steadddyy, STEADDDYYYYYYY! Stea.....Ah **** it I give up!"

I put twice per week, but it does vary slightly depending on work, weather etc. If the weather is dreadful and I'm short of time with work & assignments etc, I might work on the ground up to 4 times per week - but try to vary it with pessoa, groundwork, long reining etc so it isn't just going in endless circles.

If he is being a little bolshy or bratty - like at the moment with hardly any riding and restricted turnout - I try to do some extra groundwork with him to reinforce respect and manners. Likewise if he is being a bit stiff, I like to do some in hand bits - get him supple and flexing without me interfering with my saddle and lack of clear aids!

Once or twice a week and then we hack/school/ponce about for the other 5/6 days :) I used to use side reigns but now I just use a headcollar and do long and low stretching work

The girlies every so often to take the fizz off before the kids get on.

The red eyed hell horse of fury... never. He's like 100s of kilos of death on a string. Thanks to years of "the circle game" and the one about their backsides with his previous owner he is un-lungable. He goes to pieces and just belts round at the speed of light constantly changing direction. It's terrifying!

If anyone's managed to cure a circle gamer I'd love to know how.

at least twice a week, if not more. I use either side reins, chambon or my lungy bungy and it really helps him to loosen up, also to add some variety into his work load :)

With Seren it was never really(literally a couple of times in her life), with Nell I have done a little as I am trying to teach some voice commands and primarily get her used to the school, I do not intend on doing much lunging with her over her life going forwards, I am really doing it as part of the backing process right now, my passion is hacking anyway, not school orientated at all

I never lunge my welsh cob - he is silly on the lunge and does him no good, just puts strain on his joints. Would rather just leave him until I have time to hack him out, I can leave him 3 days or 3 months and he is just the same.

My 6 year old gets a light lunge before he comes back into work after the winter as I don't have time to ride him then!

Once a wk @ moment, my mare is wierd, she really seems to enjoy lunging - dont even need lunge whip anymore she is able to work off vocal commands & the tone of my voice:p
Would also lunge before riding if I get the sence she is super fizzy ( she is easy to read, lol)

I voted 'never' and that's true because I never lunge, I do however free school the youngsters a little in the early days of backing them. Probably each youngster is free schooled a handful of times and then we move on out of the round pen and never go back. I like long reining but I don't care for lunging at all.

probably about twice a week maby more but only a few mins at a time with my dales pony as i teach on her ranging from a 6 year old girl (hence anything faster than a walk) and nervous novice adults learning to trot canter such a sweet pony though they all love her to bits and she seems to be very spoilt with lots of treats and carrots this christmas talk about a yard favorite lol
