How often do you walk your dogs?

Just musing tonight, I have moved to a house without a fenced garden recently (yesterday!) so I seem to be walking the dogs twice a day now :) Is this average? Or do most people walk their dogs once a day?
 
when I did not have fenced garden they were walked at least twice a day and were with me when I poo picked the field and did the horses, they also had a kennel and run.
now I have fenced garden and the lurcher is walked at least once a day for at least an hour but comes to work and stables with me at least 3 times a week-they have a kennel run and heat lamp too. the older dogs 13 and 15 are walked most days in winter for a short walk but not really so much in summer as they are quite happy pottering round the garden or laying upside down with their legs in the air on their bean bags in the sunshine.
 
Oh bless, I have a mental image now of your oldies enjoying the sun :) :) My oldest is 10 1l2 now, she has perked up no end since starting on Cardalis heart medication, so I suppose I will be sticking to two walks a day :) Although I have asked permission from my landlady to get the garden fully fenced!
 
Mine goes out at least twice a day, sometimes three. Usually early afternoon, early evening and then getting up towards midnight at the minute. Otherwise, it's around three o'clock and then again any time from around ten o'clock to midnight. Except today where he went out at one, then again at five for over two hours and he's been flaked out ever since so just left him to sleep - quite pleased as it's pouring down! :)
Most of the dog walkers I know around my town go out twice a day but I know one or two who go out once.

Hello Lévrier, I was hoping you would post as been wondering if your move went smoothly. To answer your question my dogs get walked first thing and then a longer afternoon walk or a play at my daughters farm. I do have a pretty large fenced garden but my dogs are spoilt!
When I had a horsey place, land and stables they only had one walk as they were out and about with me. I would struggle without a fenced garden but that's only because I have been lucky enough to always have space.
You know what your dogs need and they will be fine whatever you decide but for your sake I hope you are able to fence somewhere in eventually
What did you decide about beds?
 
I walk mine about 7.30am for an hour and again about 3pm. If I couldn't walk in the afternoon due to really, really bad weather, I would do a few games, tricks etc to wear them out mentally!! This is there routine over many years and it would be very hard to change it now...
 
My old boy was walked about 6 times a day - he loved his walks and very much dictated to us when he wanted to go. It also suited my dad as he could have a fly cigarette!

Rowan gets walked about 3 or 4 times at the weekends when we have her and maybe about the same at my parents.

She's not a huge fans of walks but loves playing off the lead and thankfully she's well behaved enought with a good recall that we can do this.

An hour run about with a ball in the big field next to our house or in my parents garden seems to suit her.

We're hoping we can convince her that walking is fun though as we'd like to take her hill walking with us next year!
 
well technically my boy doesn't actually get a proper walk every day, as he just runs around the farm where the horses are, from 5.45-7.15 am before when at work, then if working from home he might get a quick potter at lunch time or game of fetch and then back to the farm in the afternoon. he sometimes get a 20 minutes walk before bed. we also don't have a secure garden, no side gate and broken fences. weekends and holidays he goes on some long walks
 
Ours doesn't get an organised walk as such, she just comes out and about with us on the farm. But if for whatever reason there's nothing to do on the farm or she can't come out (moving cows around etc), she goes for a run both ends of the day.

Thanks Chiffy - all went well with the house move, it is all done & we are settling in to the new place :) I have asked permission from the landlady to get the remaining bit of the garden fenced (3 sides are done, so it would be an easy job), I'm just waiting for the letting agents to get back to me. I have lived in a place with no fenced garden for 2 years a while back, so the dogs are used to going out on a lead for their walks/late night wee :)

At the moment we are still in 'moving chaos' so dog beds are loads of duvets on the floor - the dogs seem to be coping just fine :)
 
Three days a week they get a 20 minute walk before work, a 45 minute walk in my lunch hour and another 45 minutes at night. The other two weekdays I have a late start at work so we go out on the bike for a couple of miles and then mooch about on the farm with the horses, there's over an acre fenced in for free running, and another proper walk at night.

Weekends vary, two walks a day if we're home, none at all if we're competing. No competitions for the last two weeks but we were out three weekends in a row before that and will be four in a row through Jan and Feb.

May to August we do almost nothing by comparison! We don't have a fenced garden either, all pees done on lead in addition to walks.

ETA: No walks at all today beyond going to the corner for a pee, R has blood in his snot (off to work on my day off for that one) and D loathes the rain and slunk around like she'd been beaten on a ten minute walk this morning. :rolleyes:

Little blind dog cannot always cope with walks, so it depends. He does like to come to the yard with us. And in the summer when the grass on the hill is really tall he is a lot braver as he can tunnel through it. He also enjoys the snow. Hates rain, as it messes up his sense of smell.

Ginger dog can only cope with walks that don't involve meeting idiots who insist on trying to run up and hug him, so he is walked at night or during the day if weather is sufficiently foul. He gets about an hour a day on the long line. And is very happy to get home to snuggle on the sofa and watch Nigella Lawson on the TV again.
(As am I, since apparently telling someone that your dog is nervous of strangers means that they must at once go out of their way to cross the field and attempt to hug said dog. Which means that he barks. Then they complain that he isn't friendly. Well, no - he doesn't like strangers who march up and stare into his eyes whilst grabbing at his head! Neither do I, hence the walking cane blocking you from approaching him, you twit. Please go jump off a bridge.)

Collie dog will play fetch 24/7 if allowed, but is on limited exercise due to illness. He isn't allowed more than 45 minutes off lead proper exercise at the moment, but can have twice this if just walking to heel. We hope to be back to normal by next summer, so he will be getting two hours again. Spends his time supervising me for epileptic events anyhow, so he is busy all day.

Eldest dog used to be one that never stopped. Then she turned ten and could only cope with the occasional run in the park for half an hour, or else a potter about on the lead. All went downhill rapidly from there.

Our labrador needed at least three hours proper hard exercise - running, swimming, etc. Ended up rehoming her to a friend after husband injured his spine. She now gets about six hours a day off lead along with her son, and leaves him for dust. Great dog, but tireless. Would have made a nice working dog, but is gunshy.

So, it depends! :)
 
Minimum twice a day but we have high energy breeds. Puppy currently only has one 15 min walk a day but the big lad does 40 min before work. 15 min as escort for the pup and another 40 min evening romp with my husband. We do have a fenced garden too.
 
I've got 2 GSDs and mine go twice a day every day. 40 mins in the morning, 30-40 mins at night. They get more in the summer, and play outside on our yard (not horse yard, just normal yard!) then too.

Twice a week they get a longer walk (1.5 to 3.5 hours) depending on time and weather.

The little one could do with a lot more. I biked 9 miles with him running, my top speed was 29mph and average 13mph over rough terrain. OK, he had a lie down every time we stopped and drank a lot of water, but he could have gone again after a 30 min kip. Unfortunately, the same could not be said for me. He loves it though, I hope to take him again over Christmas.

LOL I took mine out this morning quite happy to do our usual walk, but Islay sulked so much we did the quick route that only takes 20 mins :D She was furious I had made her go out.

I do hope poor R is OK, sending 'get well soon' vibes to him x
 
Ten year old spaniel gets one 45 min walk a day, but we do have a garden and she is allowed out very regularly. Seems happy with this!
 
Mine come out the stables with me in the morning and whilst horses are finishing their breakfast we walk around the fields, they then go for an hour and half on the mountain where they again run free. At evening feeding they get walked around the fields again whilst horses eat. So that's three times a day and about two and half to three hours a day. Gosh writing it down that seems a lot!!

He sneezed a big red streak all up the reception desk just to show everyone what was the matter with him and begged for lots of biscuits. :p

God only knows what it is, we've come home with more antibiotics and also some steroids this time which I'd wanted to avoid as the last thing he needs is an increase in the polyuria and polyphagia. Also a long course of Panacur on the off chance it's lungworm but the symptoms aren't typical and I use Advocate, though not as often as directed. X-rays (again!) after Christmas.

Means he almost certainly won't be ready for next race in January. :(
 
Mine is a lazy git! He won't go out in the mornings so he sleeps all day til he comes down the yard with me at 3.30ish and either gets a walk or to come on a hack. He is quite old now bless him
 
BC thats a blow(excuse the pun) poor dog, perhaps the abs will sort him well enough to continue his training.


Mine get 2 walks a day and access to a large garden, this afternoon no walk just a mooch round the covered cow-yard which they were happy about as it was stair-rodding here.
 
My 7 month old papillon gets 1 40 minute walk a day, she has access to our garden but prefers playing indoors when its cold and rainy! Today she has had about 10 minutes as it was so horrible, but is happy with lots of attention instead. She's pretty active indoors which helps her burn off any excess energy :)
 
Mine has a 20min on lead walk up the road with the oh pre 7am in the dark, then comes to the stables with me for 40mins or so at 8.30. He either mooches around or if he finds a tennis ball begs me to kick or throw it for him.

Then he gets 30mins in the afternoon and let out again at night for a last minute wee. In summer he gets a lot more garden time, its to secure sadly, but its ok if we're out there and paying attention!
