How often do you walk your dogs?

Fifteen mins at 6:30am, an hour between 10am and 3pm, 15 mins around 10pm - 11pm (bedtime) and ad-hoc in the yard/paddock ( when its dry but also if I can persuade them to go out there in the rain).

Very rarely. My lurcher mooches about on the yard or runs behind the pick-up if I'm out in the fields, but if it's raining he just sleeps in the office. If I ride in the fields he likes to come too, and I always take him when I go running.

In the summer they go out for an hour morning and late afternoon. We also have a dog door so they can go in the garden whenever they want. In the winter, an hour in the morning and a 45 minute road walk at night. At the weekends I try to get out with my youngest dog's breeder, she has 4 dogs and Darcy lives seeing her extended family. She makes the strangest squeaks when she sees them.

mine (lurcher and collie cross) get an hour off lead in the morning and approx 30 mins in evening, off lead if its not too dark otherwise on flexileads..also can go in garden .. , in summer the back door is open all of the time when i am home and they like to sunbathe..,not a bad life!!!

It depends really. We have a Bichon who's not supposed to need much exercise. But of course she has as much energy as the next dog and is usually taken out at least twice a day. However at the weekend it may only be once a day as we'll go out for a couple of hours, and that really is enough.

My 7 month old papillon gets 1 40 minute walk a day, she has access to our garden but prefers playing indoors when its cold and rainy! Today she has had about 10 minutes as it was so horrible, but is happy with lots of attention instead. She's pretty active indoors which helps her burn off any excess energy :)

NinjaPony you cannot post the words "7 month old papillon" without posting a picture :) I cannot imagine what her ears look like at that age :)

Thanks to everyone for the replies, it is really interesting. We have just gone out for our second walk of the day, and like most other people today I had 4 very reluctant dogs who couldn't understand why we were out in the rain/dark :D

My 19 month old dalmatian gets an hour in the morning then either comes to work and goes freerange from 2-7pm or gets another 30 mins in the evening after work. She also comes to the pub most evenings where being patted and loved wears her out completely! Weekends when I'm not working she tends to get a good couple of hours walk in the middle of the day aswell as her normal morning hour. We do have a fenced garden and she potters in there when its dry!

Creatures are walked once a day, big walk in the woods and they just gallop the whole way round. We've decided that they shouldn't go off together after the 8 hour search the other week :) The 10 1\2 year old runs as much but not as madly.

3 times a day every single day, think they would go into meltdown if they missed a walk!
This is as standard but does not include additional activities eg agility, shows etc.

Cant believe people's dogs stay sane on one or less walk per day! (that's not a criticism, I just know mine would be bouncing off the walls, they are if they don't get 2 decent runs on those walks)

Twice a day, every day.

An hour in the morning and then 45mins to an hour in the evening. In summer we tend to run with them in the evenings and the big one comes out with the horses too at weekends.

They have access to the garden too.

I would feel awful giving them anything less than two walks. They love being outside and don't feel that one out of twenty-four hours outside is enough for a dog.

But then each dog and home is different and as long as the dogs happy and stimulated than thats what counts.

I've got a working bred whippet and a lurcher. At one point we did a minimum of 2 hours a day, with 3hours + twice a week. At one point we were doing 5 miles a day and 15 miles twice a week, but I was rehabbing my spinal injury and I was off work and walking was all I had to do. I also lived at the edge of the North Yorkshire moors so could do 15miles without going on a road. Times have changed now and I've moved down south and am back working full time. They go out twice a day, usually one 30 min ish session involving fetching and lots and lots of sprinting, and another hour session with the dog walker that varies between off lead in the woods and on lead round the red ways. I still try and do a couple of days of decent 2 hour walks, but if the weather is bad, they are happy with 20mins sprinting in the park.

Mine used to lure race and were racing fit, but not now and they seem as happy as they did before. Although now they get more brain training than hard exercise. Dogs are very adaptable! My working bred whippet can come home from a "car walk" which is basically a trip in the car and a 15min wee session, utterly shattered as hes been out to different places etc. He sometimes has to be physically dragged out of bed after an hours car walking!

I wish I could walk mine the way I used to, but real life has got in the way now! One of the main things I'm looking forward to tomorrow is a really good run with the dogs in the woods! With their breeding mine actually NEED to run for at least 15mins a day, thats what they are bred for, and hours and hours of lead walking wouldnt satisfy that need! But I can do other things with them to tire them out and satisfy them other than endless walking. We all do love a couple of hours charging through the woods though!

All three on one controlled walk of about an hour and a half. They are with me around the yard while I do the horses Am & Pm and the younger 2 come out with the horses , which means another 1-2 hours and the older boy just goes out in the garden when he needs too.

They are working Spaniels so they need to be fit to be on the beat line.

That is just one of the reasons I have greyhounds - the laziest dogs in the world - they can take as much or as little exercise as you give them :D

We both work full time so two walks would be rare, plus we're super careful with Zak's HD. If he's obviously a bit limpy, we do search and retrieve in the park instead of woods. He needs his brain occupied: when they were little, they went everywhere with me in the car/yard but the current yard isn't great for dogs (dog aggressive mal x GSD and a territorial GSD plus a stallion who likes to chase them!) Zak likes to get excited about animals on TV, that keeps him occupied too!
