I took a load of mine home last night which probably havent been washed for about a year (i havent used them in this time) The one i have on at the moment has been used for the last 5-6 months without washing.

Is this bad?

Depends how sweaty they've been getting. In summer it's probably once a week, although I may have two numnahs on the go so one can be drying whilst the other is in use. In winter much less regularly, especially if they're just getting dusty not sweaty underneath.

I hardly ever wash mine, atm she is in one of those fluffy half pads because the other ones are causing her disconfort and it hasn't been washed in a year, although i brush it off and it doesn't seem to get 1/10 as dirty as the other ones for some reason.
I'm actually worried about washing it and destroying it

Jed never sweats on his back not even in the summer. His numnah's are never greasy just full of winter coat at the moment!

Perhaps i should start to wash them more regular still!

btw so you dont think i'm cruel it is really fluffy still underneath and she never really sweats under it as I only use it in winter and have a poly pad in summer

i prob wash my 'home' ones every 2-3 weeks depending on time of year and the horse's work load. however, if we have a particually hot day i will hose it off there and then.

When they were in full work, as and when they were dirty, about 8 hrs of use. Sheepskin pads were changed as and when, sometimes after 2 or 3 rides, sometimes after a week.

I have millions of numnahs and sheepskins that get thrown in a bag and then washed once a month or so.

Now one is retired and the other only a light hack, I suspect it will be once a month.

Thumper has a clean numnah every time I ride (unless it's been a quick 40 min hack).

So basically - a clean one every day.

I wash numnahs whenever they get damp from sweat or if they have grime on them. In summer that's usually every day, in winter roughly twice a week, depending on how hard he is worked.

Clearly not enough!!! A new one every day...I would never have time/energy for that. Well done tho!!

What's so time or energy consuming about changing a numnah?

Woa i feel bad hehe i cant wash mine as my mum wont let me so i have to constantly buy new ones so i guess every 2 months with 4 horses to kit out that would be a bit too expensive lol

Not often unless they have got sweaty or smell particularly bad!!

But then I am used to having an allergic ex so using the washing machine for that sort of thing was difficult. And now I have an allergic brother..so equally as difficult!!

I wash them about every 2-3 days in summer / about very week in winter as my mare does get sweaty & if we're out having a "fun" ride then they get done more often to keep the mud/dust under control.
