I never wash it as the grime makes it more waterproof

. My mother disagrees and bungs it in the wash when I'm not looking which is annoying because she doesn't empty the pockets (bute sachets, money, bailing twine, cheques) and she washes it with detergent so it's not waterproof anymore

.

The trouble is it takes approximately 5 minutes of mucking out in a clean coat to regain that unmistakable aroma. Eau de cheval wee.... Therefore inadvisable to wash any coat until it can walk unaided. Obviously this is environmentally sound as not only saves time, but also the planet. Win Win.

Washing??? When they begin to grow new life forms I chuck them and get another one. Yes I am lazy.

P.S. I can never afford a new one so I am lazy AND smelly

What is a washing machine mine broke when i tried to kick in a horse rug. As for the coat it just crawls off to the smelly coat place usually at the back of a feed bin or some other dark corner.

LOL. Great thinking. And love the bit about them walking unaided! Tee hee.

Ha ha...clean coat goes on even smells clean as I drive to yard - pop to horse to settle her in for the night, notice she's not right. Spend 3 hours at the stables wrapped in her wee, wee thermatex (all other horses looking at me like i'd gone mad)...horse settles....get home and the coat could have walked home itself it's that bad

I was about to post to see what everyone else does! Glad I'm not the only on so sweet smelling.

Do what I do. When you get REALLY desperate with the stench, spray it in extra strength Febreze and leave it over night to dry! Dunno if it really works all that well, but at least I've tried

my normal blue coat is approx 1 year old and looks like its 5+ old. it gets washed approx 6 times a year? but that may be an over estimate

i have several coats, wash every couple of days i cant stand stinky horsey clothes!! i try not to buy feather filled as a pain to dry and can go crispy!! in the tumble dryer. when clipping, (every day at moment, clean clothes every day so not to itch and scratch!

Never. It ruins the waterproofing, and its only going to get dirty again.
Did have to buy an emergency waterproof to wear in non-horsey public though.

erm not very often....i think i've washed mine once!! My husband thinks i'm minging, especially after last week i was feding Milly her brekkie while she was having her shoes done, she spat Alfa-A, Sugerbeet etc ALL over my coat then proceeded to lick it all off....then i had to pop into Tesco on my way hope, covered in horse saliva. Oh Well!! he was a bit embaressed to be seen with me though.

I've got a mauve one that I've washed once since I got it last november for my birthday.
Plus another one that I seem to have to put straight in the wash every time I wear it. TIP:- don't buy a pale blue riding coat no matter how nice it looks in the shop!
