Depends on the horse and what their aims are.
ATM i am hacking and schooling equal amounts, with 1 jumping session a week and 1 competition, although the ex racehorse does slightly less schooling so he doesnt get sick of it. During the season i will slightly up the schooling and have a weekly gallop so would probably on hack once/twice a week!
When I was competing, I used to school whilst out on a hack - I'd leg yield up and down the track, and find corners of dryer-than-most fields to do some canterwork. We'd then have a lesson or hire a school most weekends and then go jumping on a Sunday.
Now, ironically seeing as I now have access to a lovely school, I do not school at all! Well very irregularly anyway - at present I am managing to ride about 3 or 4 times a week, and that is always a hack
Well in winter anyway... so 5 x a week.... bad i know. Can only ride in the evenings under floodlights. Usually have competition of some description and lesson most weekends.
In summer, again schooling in the evenings mainly, try to hack out a weekends (if no show/lesson) but our hacking is crap anyway its all roadwork
do vary it a bit in the summer by schooling in the fields although they are too boggy to use in the winter.
Well with the arab mare, Fazzie, I usually do both, as a local farmer lets me use his wifes schooling field, so I hack over there, do a little bit of schooling and then hack back, usually about twice a week
But when my dad rides Fazzie , he just hacks her out.
Then with the coloured 2 year old, Tia, she comes in every day and just has a bit of ground work done, leading her up and down making her walk, stand, go back etc, but thats only about 10 minutes a day. In the next few months, when she feels ready, Im going to start doing a bit more with her and introducing her to more traffic and longer walks etc. Which should prove fun
I school 4-5 times a week, and tend to hack once at weekends and compete every couple of weeks. She will always have a day off per week. If your schooling regime is varied and you keep them interested, there is no harm in doing a lot of schooling, though I think a hack or a show or something different once a week keeps them interested and gives them a bit of a "brain rest". Mind you it depends on the horse!
I school almost every time i ride, i have 2 jumping lessons a week and bob has 1-2 nights off a week. I hack when possible but with less light in the winter it is obviously harder to fit it in!
i hack twice a week on average in winter, more when i am off work, like now
summer i hack out about 4 times a week
myself and my mare are not fussed on schooling, she is older and we just enjoying happy hacks, we do small amounts of schooling whilst out hacking
i would do more schooling with my next horse, but i dont enjoy it that much, but like to do it out on hacks as a general rule
Depends on when I am working, hours etc. I have one lesson a week on the big boy. I then school him by myself anything from 2-4 times a week. My husband or I will ride him out about 2-3 times a week on top of that. Not much jumping apart from popping a log out and about. He also gets the odd lunge session.
George gets hacked up to 7 days a week (usually not that much but can be) and I will school him on the odd occasion (or lunge him), but he is quite stiff so I limit this. He prefers going out exploring tbh.
Well, in winter I hack twice a week at weekends as can't ride in the week due to no school and lack of daylight
Maybe have a jumping lesson once a month and bsja once every month - 2 months. I am feeling very lazy at the moment.
I school on hacks, leg yielding and my attemps at shoulder in etc
and in the summer I rent a school once a week to school and thats it. In summer hack 4-5 times a week - work is very busy and I have no evenings and work away a lot
Jump maybe once a fortnight in the summer in the field (mud permitting
) and compete every couple of weeks.
I do think roadwork is very important though, as is good for keeping tendons and feet nice and hard
I school about 3/4 times a week and hack the other times, will give horse a day off if he is working hard but if not he just gets a light work day where he goes for a gentle hack or is loose schooled. I like to keep him fit so he is worked fairly hard the other days (even when hacking). Occassionally vary work by jumping or lunging.
Don't school very often at all!!! Well not at all now and maybe once before an event in the summer. I don't really jump apart from at competitions either. Probably why we are a bit crap!
Badger hacks out about 5 times a week with one of his various riders and hunts about once a fortnight.
ATM, he get one day off, and on other days, I hack over to the school, see if it's free. If it is, we school and hack back, and if not, we go on a longer hack. Saturday and Sunday, we have a lesson.
ATM I am bringing my lad back into schooling after injury...
Prior to injury he was being hacked 4 or 5 days a week including a bit of jumping over solid fences as and when and Schooled twice a week, one flat work lesson and one session of us poorly attempting to recreate said lesson.....
