Oooh this is a dangerous question! I'd rather not say! Actually, it's ok cos I fell off my horse for the first time a few weeks ago (I really wanted to get it over and done with).
We were cantering down a track when something spooked him and he slammed the brakes on and span round - I tried to cling on but was upsetting him, so I 'fell' off. Landed on my feet which was nice
I've had a lot of near misses jumping so I'm waiting for the inevitable there! I've had him 2 1/2 years btw
Lst fell off about 6 months ago, then about 6 months before that, so prob about twice a yr. Used to fall off every lesson when I was a kid learning to ride at local riding school!
In my first 15 years of riding, I fell off a total of 6 times. After starting riding again, I fell off 1 time in 2 years. Since getting the spooky pony, I've fallen off 7 times. Hmm.
I fall off Monty once a year........like clockwork! Although I don't really ride him any more as he has a part-loan girl who rides.
I have never parted company with Zoom, but she has fallen with me a few times!! She is a terrible headshaker, coupled with being fizzy as hell and she reared over on me twice this year and fell over twice by simply losing her footing when pratting about.........methinks I'm gonna turn her away next April if I can't get it under control!
Too often! On a period once every week or two, on a bad week sometimes 2/3.
I'm riding lots of youngsters though and have a chestnut mare who splats you if you miss her in to fence.
Not that I am a good rider, but the idea of falling off makes me feel physically sick, so I somewhat resemble a washed cat when losing my balance am at risk of coming off: claws digging in screeching and clinging on for dear life.
I think the last time I *fell off* would probably be November 2003 with my first horse at a SJ comp, I flattened against the boards of the indoor comp and since then...just no way. I have had horses fall down and I still just cling on. Monkey girl style.
ETA: May 2005 my other horse's girth broke and as we were cantering up the hill the saddle fell off. I managed to cling on as long as possible but then the bucks came, so I don't know if that counts.
I have yet to fall off the mare I have had since September.
I parted company with my previous horse many times. A couple of times at a fence, once on the road and a fair few times on the flat. My last fall off him gave me whiplash that took 7 months of physio to rectify.
I fall off quite a bit and it really does not bother me. I think it is the fear of falling and fear induced tension that causes so many injuries from what are pretty minor tumbles.
Why do I fall off? Because I have a boisterous pony and because I (we) push my luck. Also because he can spin 180 degrees like nothing you ever saw; one minute we're heading in one direction, the next, he is off in another, while I sail on horseless.
Not recently, last time was about 3 years ago, new yard, doing some schooling, pony was being difficult, I told mum we should stop when he relaxed a little, she insisted one more circle- pony said it was one more circle too many, took off, headed for the stable wall, bucked and swerved and we parted company- I was seeing stars after that one!
Not because I'm a good rider, nor because my horse is well behaved, just i know what to expect with him, I'm still expecting to get caught out tho.
I fell off Sept 2008 - off a wee pony but it absolutely killed. It just bronced and I had no hope. Actually flew threw the air before landing. Touch wood in the 2 years I've loaned Paddy I haven't fallen off him as he is such a superstar. Touch wood again, I don't think anyone has ever fallen off him and he is 9yo
My first few years of riding I fell off about once every six months.
Then when I reached 14/15 I found I didn't bounce so well and had numerous injuries and broken bones. Since then, I've been doing what Scribbles does! I do anything to stay on and not hit the floor. I've ended up in some insane positions (hanging off my mares neck sideways for one) and somehow managed to get back into the saddle, god knows how.
Before I got a horse not for at least 5 years! But then my 2nd horse threw me off after a few weeks of having him at the end of last year then not until yesterday
although I wasnt fully mounted yet so does it really count as I wasnt really on to fall off?!
Its generally not through lack of trying on my horses part, but I haven't come up her for a fair few years now. I cling on for anything cos if I come off her she is lethal!
However the last time I came off was from my dartie about 2years ago. We were having a 'argument' (and I was bareback as my arse and her saddle don't reallt go together very well) under some very very low trees...she went up and I just got swept off her back...I have to say I have never laughed as much as I did that day falling off.
Ziggy - woop someone who understands! When I tell people that I *don't* fall off, and haven't in years and years and year they just roll their eyes disbelievingly! Like you my last 'incident' involved me hanging over to one side of the horse stuntman style. Its just the fast moving ground underneath you.. falling off would be like throwing myself out of a moving car on a motorway.
NeilM I totally agree, I wish I did know how to fall, but I'm just so terrified of legs everywhere... Its one of the reasons why I stick to SJ and small event courses.
um, think i have fallen off 4 times since christmas and can't really remember before that.
different horses, different reasons but i'm quite lucky as (so far!) i'm not scared of falling off and it's really not a big deal to me at all- hence not remembering how many times i came off last year or before that!
my first pony had me off 37 times in 3 years though which may have made me immune to worrying about hitting the deck!
I haven't fallen off for about a year now. Can't say it bothers me though. When you think how often you fall off through your life and how many times you REALLY hurt yourself. It's not worth worrying about IMO.
Also I think the less you worry about it, the more relaxed you are and hence less likely to fall off anyway!
with my last pony, id fall off probably every time i tried to jump..not because i couldnt sit it, but hed take off and then somehow not jump the fence and id just keep going
now im not going to say how many times i currently fall off- tempting fate and all that! but a lot less than my last pony
Couple of months ago I fell off for the first time in 30 years.
Sounds impressive but wasn't at all as it was actually my first time back on a horse for about 25 of those years, and only about the 3rd time ever I'd fallen off!
Horse I was on is a lovely semi retired TB schoolmaster, gently hacks out about 1 hour a week, no cantering. He was a bit hyper to realise he was in our field - which he visits for a few weeks of winter grazing = long grass = treat, and decided he was going to canter but only with his back legs when I thought he was going to stay in trot. Meaning I didn't know what was going on and promptly bounced off. Instructor thought it hillarious
. When I realised I was going to hit the deck I had enough time (he's 16.2) to think 'relax, you don't want broken bones' . Amazingly, as I bounced on my bum and back, I have un-trapped a nerve and COMPLETELY cured my sciatica. Not a recommended method, but very effective.
When I jump I tend to fall off more often than not. I've fallen off on many occassion because a dirty stop was put in at a jump and I end up doing a comedy roll, in slow motion and land the other side of the jump or the other one which I seem to be good at (not falling off) is star jumping, as the horse does the jump I let go of the reins and my arms and legs form a star jump shape but I land safely back in the saddle. I seem to tell myself that I will fall if I jump but still jump anyway and end up doing silly stuff
mine was a couple of months ago off a vile little pony. i was jumping, came up to the jump he 1/2 takes off then slams his feet down and dropped his shoulder. I still the the jump but by myself, he followed after me and tried to trample me. I was not best impressed.
I've just counted it up and I've fallen off my boy 8 times in 4 years. 6 jumping - 3 xc, 1 sj and 2 in lessons, always when he's put a dirty stop in. One when he tripped in a tractor rut as we were galloping across a field and one where he moved when I got on and I went flying over the other side! I suppose that's once every 6 months on average but there's only been 2 in the last 18 months so there were more in the early days.
I didn't fall off my old boy that often - maybe 6 times in the 13 years I had him, but they were all quite spectacular and usually resulted in him falling over as well! I still bear the scars of a few of those!
mmm I have a horse with a dirty stop and a big buck, so when things are going badly it can be quite a regular occurrence.
The last time I was going XC, he stopped and swerved at a hedge and I ended up stuck in it arse first, flaining around like and upside down turtle (OH Description).
I was there for ages too as the jump judge had sprinted off to catch my horse before checking I was OK! The next competitor almost jumped me!
Its the second time I've had that fall too (although at different hedges). The first time they called for a hedge fluffer over the tannoy!
