How old is a horse in human years??

Im sure i have read somewhere that to find out a horses age you multiply by 3???

Does anyone know if this is true, or what the real conversion would be?

If it is x3, then my girl is 63!

Thats where i went wrong! I multiplied by 4.4!

So my horse isn't even quite 40 and yet people are labelling him as a veteran who's past it! One vet who has never seen to George before, but it was an emergency, asked me if he was retired.

JOKING RIGHT? This horse can outpace a 17.2hh flashy warmblood, and he's only just 15h and a fat little cob!

Aren't horses veterans when they get to 16? Well my horse is 18 and is a veteran in terms of age and nothing else.

I just wondered when they should really be classified as Veterans.... but didnt want to suggest a human year to put that too!!

I think similar to humans really.

I think when horses being classed veterans at 16, has been based on various clinical signs horses of this age have generally begun to show. However, vet medicine has moved on, horsecare has moved on, knowledge has moved on; and I would think that 16 is a little young to be considered a veteran.

Cobs are certainly hardier types, so there is the issue of different breeds showing different ailments at different times.

It's hard to say, really, but I would be prepared to say mid twenties.

Lanky- i do agree that 16 is too young! I dont think my girl would appreciate it if she knew she was being called a veteran! ... or my mum lol! so therefore around 50 years old in human terms, you are a veteran?!
