How old is old?

There are 18 /19 year old horses competeing at the highest levels of show jumping and eventing and many horses and ponies continue competing until they are in there mid twenties. My best friends horse is 36 and was in full work until a year ago. Personally, I'd happily buy an 18 year old fit and sound schoolmaster type, but I don't buy to sell on or compete at a high level. In answer to your question, I think about 23 years of age is old.
 
I bet my 21 year old is in better shape than a lot of horses half her age

My girl is coming up to 22 and still being ridden, sound, happy and very well in herself. I do go a lot easier on her now and she gets throughly spoilt. I sincerely hope she will keep going for many more years.
