How old is old!

not saying how old i am but a lady who was at my yard only gave up at 75 because she hurt her knee very badly (im not that old yet ) and then had to have her horse pts... she feels she would like to start again now her knee is alot better but feels it wouldnt be sensible with a horse she doesnt know ... so she is staying retired....

Well I feel about 100 today but I'm 42!!! But however old I feel I shall have horses in my life in some shape or form. Quite fancy being an old lady with a herd of mini shetlands!

I have always said if I am still riding when I am 70 I shall wear a head scarf like the queen rather than a hat and if I fall of and hurt myself it would be a good way to go!!!

I know people who are well over retirement age who still ride. They are all young at heart and more flexible and daring than many "youngsters" I know.

So I would say, Keep Going! and make it fun!

Even though I am feeling a tad old today ('only' 45) I do feel that riding makes you stay feeling young. Its just I was reading some of the very intelligent comments on here by children born in 1985. Then realised that 1985 was 26 years ago!!!! Decided to carry on riding and give up noticing numbers!

Well I am 30 now, and I hope to ride in to my 50's if I can, health allowing.
A couple of years ago I met a lady out riding her pony, she was in her 60's and I felt great admiration and hoped that I would still be out riding a pony at her age :D

My dads friend bought himself a recently backed 3 year old, I see him going for miles on it, its now rising 5 and when he goes off for a hack its a good 2/3 hour hack. The man is 71, although if I am honest he would pass for 50ish. I will stop riding when my body stops me from getting on anymore, untill then its radox and muscle rub for me

I had my first canter on the lead rein out on a hack and the lady who had hold of the rope from the other horse was in her 70s and had broken pretty much every bone at some point or another but she was just wonderful. I remember being utterly enthralled by her stories that day ( I was 6 and although I'd been having lessons at home I hadn't got passed trotting and she kindly gave me my first canter out trekking in the new forest). I hope I am like her and still loving it in to old age :)

and when you get to your 50's like me you will be hoping to be like the lady I met on an endurance ride.... on a bigger horse than me and a young 83 :p.

A person young enough to be my daughter caused quite a consternation at a clinic I was at when she announced she though she had to look out for her mum as being more "vulnerable" and needing a steddy neddy cos whe was 50    ......... I suppose we can take heart in that she obviously did not consider any of us there "too old" to be riding less than perfect horses :D :D :D.

Maybe we don't "bounce" as well as when we were younger and not so keen on "broncing" .......... but in our heads we never get old :)

Oh great!

I'm 50 and you must think I'm amazing then, as I'm the age you are HOPEING:rolleyes: to still be riding till!!
Despite the rickety old bones and purple hair, I still ride my 10 yr old SFx mare every day, everywhere at all speeds and over all terrains!

And amazingly I also muck out, fill water buckets, haynets and pooh pick!
Not bad for an old crock eh?!!

Jeez, I feel old now:(;):D

Oh! And we do bounce! Twice last month I fell off cantering over the fields. Not something to be proud of I know, but when the brain cells start dying off.....s*!^ happens.

I met an 83 year old lady on a fun ride organised by the hunt recently! She said her dad didn't give up until he was 90 so she had a good few years left yet! She doesn't jump out hunting anymore though!! I had great admiration for her!! Hope I can keep going that long!!

<joins club>

50 and still staggering along on my walking frame, when I'm not using my bathchair

:D

My friend was born on exactly the same day as the Queen. She lost her horse just before last Christmas and the only reason she didn't replace him was that she was due to go into hospital for a hip replacement. She has now recovered and is looking for another now - she is 85, rides and drives!

Ha ha you made me smile :D :D I loved the 'health allowing' crikey one doesn't turn 50 and become an old croak. I thought exactly the same as you to that post. It's like a 5 year old exclaiming that 25 is sooooo very old!!!!! Wait til they get there!!!! That's one certainty in life - we all age!
Gosh and we are handling a computer at 50 too....steady. :)

I challenge you to a ride-off. Any discipline, you name it. Should be an easy one for you as I'm a 51 yo. :p
I ride a lot better now than I did when I was 30 ;)

I've just returned to riding after a 35 year break, so sort of a beginner again! I'm 55.

I only gave up because I was forced to for health reasons, so now I'm back I'm determined to ride for a as long as I can. I resent those "lost" 35 years.

I do have osteoporosis though, so I'm not sure I can bounce

I'm the opposite to you, 52 and riding a bit worse than when I was 20/30, but then I did have an accident (non horse related) which has affected some bits that need to be more flexible than they now are. Hope to keep riding for as long as everything works, into my 70's maybe? Oh, and all my horses are waaay crazier than those I had 20 years ago!

My late grandfather ( a proper old school horseman) hunted til he was 86, and only gave up when he couldn't stand on a gate and jump onto his fidgety horse when he fell off - which happened more and more often as he got more decrepit. My grandmother swore it was less to do with old age, and more likely to be the speed with which he polished off his hip flasks (note plural - he had one for each pocket of his hunt coat)

Well I'm 9 years off being really old - with me being 41!

50 is young! I would class mid 80's as being old! I still feel the same as I did when I was 18, and hopefully will continue riding for years yet.

My dad didn't learn until he was 52... he was fed up being left behind mending fences lol!

He only gave up, aged 65 ish, because his lovely safe mare retired and he didn't want to start afresh with something else.

lol, an old crock! not at all! Depends how fit you are. I have a pretty rubbish back so if I am riding into my 50's still I will be very pleased, if I can go beyond, even better....:D
