Just for fun and because I'm nosy.. how old and how experienced were you when you got your first horse/pony?

(sorry if this ones already been done) :D

In my case - sixteen and novicey ish

Had my first loan when I was ten. Learnt to canter and jump on this pony. A mum at the school set up a pony saturday thing at her yard basically we mucked up, poo picked and we got a lesson each out of it, I ended up loaning a pony on the yard.

Then got my first pony when I was 14 who I still have today, Toffee :D Although I didnt own her until I was 18 as she was handed to me after full loaning her for 3.5 years. This horse taught me a love for welshies and how to really own a horse and how to bolt :D

I got my first pony when I was 12yo. I had been riding for years but had never cared for one by myself before and my parents know nothing about horses so was very novice. Luckily the livery yard I started at was (for the most past!) friendly and taught me a lot.

37 when I bought an ex racer for my 16yo daughter. I don't ride her myself of course, but I do legally "own" the Bellzilla.

Jess (daughter) was 11 I think when she got Solo on loan. 16 when she got her first fully owned horse.

28. No loans or borrowed ponies beforehand, had my BHS stage 1, riding and roadsafety, Horse Owners Level 2 etc, but never had done the daily care thing, I didn't even plan to buy a horse, it was a spur of the moment thing. Still have my lovely boy now (I'm 42) and I still think how incredibly lucky I am to have my own pony!

16, earlier this year, but he's a share.
But i've been riding for 8 years, worked at various yards for 4/5 years before I finally found a pony that was close enough to home that my parents would drive me.

I was 18 when I bought my first pony - a 14.1hh black gelding called Bertie. I had been riding since I was 11 and had helped etc at the local riding school evenings, weekends and school hols etc. I had taken some school horses to shows and had got a job after I left school and saved all my money and bought Bertie for £595 inc bridle! My dad bought me a saddle as a present.

I was 14, I'm now 19 and I still have him! :) I had been riding for two and a half years, had been learning about how to look after horses by helping out at a local riding school and also I had had two ponies on loan before I got my own so I was fairly experienced.

2, was sat on a pony since I could sit up :D
Didn't do any shows till I was 5 but we were always strapped for cash so lived on loans till I was given my old Welshie 2 years ago. I worked my butt off and now I'm got a horse I love and is getting better and better every day :)

I got my first horse, a chesnut mare, when i was 14. Before that i had had a few riding lessons, and rode one of my dad's friend's horses every week for a couple of years pror to that. my dad had worked shire horses so he knew about horses and could oversee me. i used to have to do everythng and as soon as i got a part-time job, i had to pay towards her upkeep.

21. Got my boy last month. I'd been riding 15years. Shared for the last 2 years. I had the basic knowledge of keeping a horse but he has already taught me so much more already!

had a section A when I was about 4 or 5 then he died and I got my first 'real' pony when I was 13. He was a chestnut Welsh D and an evil git but I loved him more than life itself (he's still my 'one' and always will be)

Bx

13 when I got my first horse had been riding since I was 6 and helping and working at the yard for about 2years. Got my first pony when I was 15 and had sold the horse got another horse and sold her as well. Still have pony now at 19.

When I was about minus 2! When my Mum bought her horse, she was given an elderly Welsh Mountain pony called Sugar as a companion. She was our first pony. There's a picture of me sitting on her with my legs poking out at right angles because they were too short to go down the sides!

She passed away when I was about 10. We then had several ponies on loan and I didn't get my next horse - my first very own - until I was 20.

41...

Rode from 8-15 (riding lessons and friends' ponies and a bit of Pony Club). Then 2 years of lessons before I got my own 6 years ago.

I was 11 when I got my first pony. I started riding at 8 got my first loan pony 3 months later and had a couple of loans til my parents realised it wasn't just a faze!

Gave up at 16, swapped 4 legs for 4 wheels! Then 9 yrs later bought a youngster to back and haven't looked back!!

Been riding since I was 4 years old. Had my first loan pony when i was 10 for 5 years. Had various other loan horses and decided to buy my own this year.

36! (3 years ago) Riding since I was 7, begged and cried my parents for one. First they thought, "it's just a craze, it'll pass", then they humoured me, then when they realised it was for keeps, they said "oh ho, go off to uni, get a job n buy ur own". So I went off to uni, got a v demanding job that took all my time, then got married, had kids and finally got back into it all!

Parents (especially mum) so anti-horse that I didn't own up to telling them I had my own until last year. At which point I thought, s*d it, I'm all grown up now n noone's gonna stop me!!!

I was 18 months old and my pony was an evil little white shitland called Pauly Boy Chap. He liked it when I was unable to do anything other than sit there, but got fed up when I got to the stage of actually wanting him to do what I wanted. We parted company many many times :D Loved that wee pony though.

When I was 6 my father sold him totally unexpectedly to a neighbour. Same afternoon my mum bought him back :D (Way to go Mum) He stayed with us until he died at about the age of 35.

Had my first loan pony when I was 4yrs old - he was a *****land!! Lol..... I wasn't experienced and neither were my parents, but my parents' friends' daughter (who WAS experienced) took me under her wing.....

Have always owned ponies/horses from that age..... however, I did have a 2 yr break from horses when I was about 27yrs old, this was because I had to have my 4 yo PTS (I'd owned her from a foal) and it totally broke my heart, I thought I would never have another horse, but hey, life goes on, and here I am now :)
