How old were you?

I am one of six children and my parents couldn't afford a horse for me so I promised myself I would have one when I started earning my own money and I eventually had mine at the age of 19 but didn't actually buy her but was given her by my then future sister in law who had out grown her but didn't want to sell. She was a fantastic pony and we bred a lovely foal from her that I still have, she was 19 in July this year.

I had just turned 14. Got a fell pony who i hated at first but now i love him to pieces and he is 1 in a million. I sold him to a little girl who was looking for her first pony but he is still on the yard and i shouted on him today and he came to treats and kisses :o:)

Family always had horses etc so had ponies etc on loan, was given my first pony aged 7 I think! I used to have him every winter from a local riding school for his holidays, and at the end of the winter one year they said I could keep him :) had my own since then x

I got a Shetland for Christmas when I was 7. My parents led me out onto the patio and there he was! I sound super spoilt don't I but I think he was a freebie due to him being pretty nuts! Before him I used to make do with my Mum's donkey :-)

I got my first pony at 12 after spending every weekend and school holiday for two years helping at the local riding school (for which i didnt get even one free ride!)

He was a 13hh welsh section b. I got my second pony at 14 and my first horse at 15. I gave up riding at 19 to go travelling but thanks to the olympics I'm totally inpired and hope to have another horse by this time next year! I'll be 41. I've set up a savings account and am squirrelling away every penny!

im 17 now and no sign of a horse for a long time :( im saving up though, £100 at the moment, that wouldn't even buy me a shetland!
ah well I can dream. maybe one day :)

I'll be 30 next August (eeek) and I'm still waiting... I have 4k in a hidden savings account to buy my horse but I'm still not in a position to provide enough for livery fees/emergency vet fees, not if I ever want to move out of my Mother's house!

My two days a week with Idiotpony look like the closest I'm ever going to get for a while too!

I was about 8 when we got Rocky a bright bay new forest gelding. He was so handsome. I owe my whole childhood to him. Had him until I was 30. He's still with me buried in the field though. Happy days !

8 I think my parents were fed up of my tantrums and gave in. The only problem was that they didn't have a clue about horses and got me sprite as a Christmas present. He was advertised a 5 year old child's pony but we ended up with a two year old who hadn't been poperly broken! That pony gave me the best 2 years of my life and needless to say I now have a pretty secure seat!

Got my 1st at 10 saved the money i'd earned mucking out farrowing pigs for 2 years on my Dads farm- hard work but completely worth it.

Always bought young and made money on them to fun the next size up.

We moved to Cornwall briefly when I was 13, and mum bought me a pony; only had him for a few months though, as mum couldn't get a job down there & couldn't afford to fund where we were living :(

Then shared a few from late-twenties, and bought my veteran 10 years ago, just short of my 31st birthday. He's 29 now, just been diagnosed with Cushings but once my leg is mended I'll hope to bring him back into work.

I then got my 2nd horse 3 years ago, at the age of 38; he had to be PTS 2 years later; I then bought my horse of a lifetime (who threw me off hence the buggered leg :D )

I have 3.5k saved so far! Whats your target figure? I was thinking 8k to 10k to start, in order to buy a horse and gear, equipment ect.

I hadn't thought about that much! Might be nice to get up to 6k, before getting cracking. 4k or under on the beast, hopefully get some tack in with that and then 2k away for emergencies or things that I didn't think I need but suddenly do, like rugs or boots etc...
The thing that would do me in would be the livery fees, I dunno about Richmond prices but I'd need at least part livery and from what I've seen around here (SE London-Kent borders)its expensive.
I don't drive either so that'd be the other problem - the transport fees to get to pony! Anything with decent turn out is about 45 mins - over an hour to get too!

Rode from the age of 6 at riding school and rode my aunties horses, had a bit of a break from serious riding till I met my OH when I was 22 and started riding his ex Novice eventer, OH retired his mare to his sister and we got DJ as a 4 year old.

2 years ago I got Chloe on loan initally for 6 months, was left some money last year and was able to buy my "proper first" horse at the age of 28.

Sadly DJ was PTS earlier this year and in July OH bought Amber who is 5, if everyone had their own, she's really his horse but I'm "allowed" the odd ride now and again! :D

the first ridden one that I didn't have to share with my siblings was 10 years old, she was called Sovereign lovely Palomino mare, she was 10 years when we got her in 1983/4 bit of a sod to box took me through more than one hedge before we turned her around and was a fabulous pony. She went out on loan when I outgrew her and they sold her never to be seen again :( I'd love to know what happened to her.

I'm not sure i fancy keeping a horse around this area. Yes its very expensive, but Im not sure what the hacking would be like. I get very nervous on the roads after being hit by a car whilst out riding on my first pony. There would have to be lots of bridleways.

If I kept it far outside the m25 it would have to be full livery(still would be too costly) as I just wouldnt be able to manage all the driving, diy and work. Im trying to persued the OH to move elsewhere, but he's not too keen and he's very specialised in his job so llocations limited. Perhaps he could commute!

I think it'd be rude of him not to commute!

I share Idiotpony and he lives in Surbition, we hack for miles, to esher common and around claygate and places like that. I suppose that's a bit far away from Richmond? I don't know the area too well!

I am very lucky! I had a pony brought for me when I was just a baby! Had ponies brought/sold loaned and shown for people untill 12 and then my mum sold her share in her business to buy my jumping pony :) I then had another along side him and was then given an exracrr, gone to pot since then and now own 3 Ex racers!

No those places are really close especially esher! I could drive there in less than 15 mins. Is there plenty of off road hacking?
