bit of a dilema.......

seen a really nice 12.3 (and bit) welsh b pony. stocky not fine for my nearly 11 year old daughter.

We are not a competition family - more local shows/fun things but still dont want her looking silly! and the other 12.212.3's ive phone about have been outgrown by 9 years olds!

wondered what age your children are who ride similar types. Im hoping we could get at least 2 years. daughter is avg height/build.

thanks all x

Erm, currently, 21 and riding it for a friend's daughter whilst she's away on holiday.:D Daughter is 5'6 and this pony does take up a lot of leg and my daughter is long in the leg and short in the back. She does look too big but not ridiculous. Her normal ride is a wide 16.3:eek:

My 7yr old is very leggy & has an 11.1 who I expect will last her another 2yrs, at which point her legs will be too long to advance her riding (as well as looking a bit long) but should still get away with another years hacking. And if I didn't already have next pony I would be looking around 13hh to last her to 13 or so. However kids are getting bigger, I've noticed a few outgrowing them weightwise before height nowadays. Plus different levels of ability/confidence, younger kids outgrow ponies ability wise at different ages. Tbh, if your daughter is happy & confident & she has a bit of space to grow a few inches I wouldn't worry what anyone else does. I'd rather see a child that looks a bit tall having fun & gaining confidence & skill on a smaller pony, than a pea on a mountain booting away at the saddleflaps with a harsh bit for control, & too overhorsed to have fun or learn.

My daughter is nearly 23 and still rides her 12.3NF who is quite stocky. She is only 5ft 4 mind, I ride him too and I'm 50 :) Depends on how much she's going to grow! I'd say until she gets to needing roller skates I wouldn't worry :D

I love Welsh B's. I have 3 of them. 2 of them are 12.3 hh. My daughter is 10, and I find them the perfect size for her, if anything a little big as my children are mad on mounted games. My 12 year old boy rides our fine 12.3 hh for games and jumping. Although has a 13.2 hh for cross county, polocrosse, jumping etc..

I was 9, 10 and 11 when I had my 12.3 NF - wayyyy back in late 80's/early 90's. I never outgrew her as such, just needed something 'more ability' wise.

I don't think it matters on age of child, nor length of leg (- although long legs knocking poles down can look a bit ). Sadly what does effect it more than anything IMHO, and personal experience, is peer pressure. If a child, say age 12 has a solid 14.2 or 15 hander then most girls (it is mainly girls) want to follow. You are far more likely to see a child looking too small on a horse than a child looking too big on a pony.

My (small) 13yo has happily ridden an 11:2 we had on loan for her littlle sister. Her own pony (who she's ridden since she was 6) is 13:1h and, although she isn't too small, I can see my daughet wanting to do more than her pony is capable of. Her 10yo sister has a stockier 13h / 13:1 NF and I don't see her outgrowing her pony any time soon.

My daughters 1x (almost) 7 year old and 1x (almost) 6 year old are on 11.2hh Section A's and are perfect at the moment but both my daughters are the same height (1m20 - age 9 clothes) and strong athletic build and I don't see them still being on them for many more years, as I think they will become too tall in the body in about 18 months time.

I would imagine by 10 they will be on 13.2hh's- I got my 14hh at 12 and i was a tiny scrap we'd been looking at 13.2hhs but he was perfect so I guess it depends on the child and the pony. I personally don't like seeing over horsed children but sometimes the match is right- either way:)

Hi,

As OP'd have said it doesn't really depend on age/height. I ride a 14hh welsh, am 5ft 2in and at the limit of a good weight for him.

Just depends really on whether they have out grown the ponies ability. There's a gal at our stables who rides a 13hh with a lovely big jump - she's 16 now, is mid weight and her legs dangle under his belly but they suit each other so well and compete at local shows in XC, SJ etc and are always in ribbons.

I suppose if the match looked a little ridiculous and need of roller skates then maybe it's time for a a bigger pone. ? :D:D:D

My nearly 9 year old rides a 13hh.My just turned 7 year old started off sharing the 13hh but now has a 12.2.Both are tiny skinny little things. However,I am 5ft 8 and have ridden the 13hh too.
