My Haflinger is 13 and i have had her for 2 years.
Apart from recovering from laminitis at the mo she is in good health.
Does anyone have any opinions as to the age limit when you shouldnt breed anymore?
She has had 9 foals previous but i really would like to get something out of her for when shes 'almost' ready to retire??

If she has had laminitis i probably wouldnt want to put her in foal again - foaling can induce laminitis and if she is prone to it anyways it increases the risk. Also 9 foals is rather a lot - just my view.

My mare is having her first foal in 2008, she will be 15 when she gives birth.

Its the first time she has shown any sign of laminitis, in the 2 years ive had her.
Obviously im doing all i can to prevent it coming back as i know now shes had it she'll be prone to it!
Good luck with your foal!!

I believe the mare will have a say in it somewhat as to when she no longer wishes to have more foals - they have a cunning way of getting around it.

I don't think she is very old for a broodmare and realistically as she is a seasoned broodmare she could probably go on to having many more foals for many more years.....however.......with laminitis under her belt now, you definitely have to be more careful. If she were my mare, I wouldn't breed her in 2008 but would monitor her for that year. If laminitis was a one-off and did not occur again then she may well be fine to breed in 2009. Obviously her after-birth care would be paramount as she could become susceptible to coming down with laminitis again.

Thanks for the advise Tia.
I wasnt looking to breed for a couple of years so i can keep a close eye on her and do all i can to prevent the laminitis coming back, vet has advised she can start being turned out tomorrow! Happy days!
Now the pain and swelling has gone im sure she thinks im keeping her locked in for the sake of it bless her!

For sure! Exercise is the best thing to stave off further lami attacks. Best of luck.
