How on earth are some people allowed to have horses?

I have heard some very upsetting news recently of a young girl i knew (16 or 17yrs old).

To cut a very long story short she lost her temper with the horse and made it go on the gallop track and basically 'ragged' it round (to teach it a lesson I take?).
After this the horse was staggering to the stable and the vet was called, its suspensory ligament's were completely torn!! It had to be put down immediately.

I just can't believe that someone would be so stupid and so thoughtless (she isn't a novice owner) that they would do this to a horse?...I would be devastated had I done that to my own horse, I couldn't live with myself. She is now looking for another horse!! I know we all loose our temper but the most mine get is a smack and a few words.

Given both my neds an extra hug tonight, they are so precious

p.s I don't know what the point of my post is, but I just had to vent

i agree it's a real shame. some people just don't seem to have any kind of restraint. as long as animals are around there will always be animal cruelty as it is shockingly easy for some people to take their frustration out on an animal as they have no way of communicating back and are in effect 100% submissive. it's horrific to think that to some people animals are just disposable.
 
That's horrific. Like you - mine gets a smack occasionally for rude behaviour in hand (& I mean rude), but that's it. Very sad indeed. Unfortunately people can be very unpleasant where animals are concerned. Breaks my heart :(

I will admit to sometimes losing my head a little, but nothing even in the same league as that - I'm talking maybe a smack when on the ground - I don't even carry a whip when I'd riidng anymore!
 
Oh my word :( I've had a rubbish evening too and gave my girl a big hug already. They are precious and often defenceless in an odd way, when at the mercy of their owners.
 
very very sad.
i heard a very similar story years ago, an army guy (adult, so no excuse) who had a horse run away with him, and decided to "teach it a lesson" by making it carry on galloping when it was trying to pull up. it broke down completely and had to be shot on the spot.
poor horses. idiotic girl.
 
How sad, some people do not deserve these beautiful creatures, poor horse, she should be banned from keeping horses or any animal for that matter, I mean we can all lose our temper but this is just extreme :(
 
I've said it before and I'll say it again, a Certificate of Competency should be mandatory before anyone can buy any animal. Something rather like having to pass a test before being able to get a Driving Licence. Yes, it will cost money,but that doesn't matter compared to the animal welfare aspects.
 
Quite tempting to chase such people around an athletics track until they suffer a similar fate, only they should be left in a crumpled heap to die slowly.

If I'm in a bad mood, I simply don't ride - I hurl poo around instead.
 
how can people do things like that and she's looking for another horse obviously couldnt care less that her one has just been put down as she's a down right idiot!
 
That's terribly sad for the poor horse, just goes to show that some horses have the most amazing attitudes and will do so much for us even to their own detriment, although with mine if I tried to take her on and show her who's boss in that way - well, she'd take me on and probably win! It'd be me needing to go to A&E!
 
No one should be allowed to get away with cruelty like that. Someone should have the guts to report her (not saying that is you, bye the way, as you were not a witness). If she's got the capability to do that once, what is the chance she will not do it again? Utterly disgusted.
 
How dreadful! :( I had a mini argument with a novice owner at my place. Her new horse is VERY thin......emaciated! It also squeals and kicks when you touch anywhere around it's back end. She said she doesn't need the vet to check it since she 'let's me ride her'.

Horses put up with ALOT! Monty was like the princess and the pea and would buck if he had a hair out or place but Zoom played a horseball tournament with a back so bad i touched her and she collapsed (not with me I hasten to add!!!).

Id love to get my hands on her, I really would. The vet should report her if he/she has any sense.
 
That is discusting!!! Makes me want to beat the stupid girl until her tendons go...
I agree - People should have to have a license before being allowed to own horses, or any other animal for that matter... I would be perfectly happy to shell out a hundred quid or so to get a license...It'd definately seperate the people who want one for the sake of it and the ones who can actually look after them properly!

Poor horsie...Feel so sorry for her.

But definately report her - not sure who to, but she definately should never be allowed another one. I understand that they are big dangerous animals and that they could potenially hurt you quite badly, they do need to know who's boss, but with horses that r brought up properly a smack and a few harsh words should normally do the trick!!
 
How awfull! Reminds me though of the film Pharlap - a winning racehorse who was classed as just extremely lazy and was worked to death till it learnt to race, then became a winner. Think too many people think awkward or slow horses are just lazy, when they could be nursing a problem and looking after themselves.
 
I'm afraid I've heard of worse (because the horse survived to get another dose, and another and another) from a friend regarding a livery on her yard. And yes, it was all to teach the horse a lesson.
 
Not that I like to admit it but I am closely related to some monsters who I have seen beat a 30+ year old pony over a 5 foot jump until it couldnt jump anymore, all because it stopped at a jump in a beginners class.

I havent spoken to these people in ten years after I was told that my horse needs "a good kick in the guts"

These "so called family" work for a very well known animal rescue!!!!
 
Ok, In no way, if this has happened the way it has been described is correct, should she be allowed to get away with this sort of cruelty. However, gossip is dangerous. Just recently a girl I know had to have her horse pts due to electrocution, 3 weeks after the event. All of sudden, it was going around that the vet didn't want to have to put it to sleep, she did it because it was no use to her any more blah blah blah. As it happened the truth was that the vet had gone into the surgery and said to another vet " I am having to put **** to sleep today, such a shame I have to do this as I really hoped I could do something for her but she isn't responding to treatment"
This vet then told one of his clients who was also a livery on the same yard and it happened to get turned into "*vet* didn't want to put that horse to sleep, he thought it was needless and he could have saved it and more could have been done. He was quite upset by it but the owners didn't want to carry on with her. So much for her loving her horse, they are never good enough if she can't compete"
Very cruel and very upsetting to hear after the event and completely untrue.
 
I must admit I find the story a tad unlikely, I would also question a vet that felt the need to spead such gossip about a customer, to other customers, rather than report the individual to the appropriate authorities.
