how on earth can people ride without gloves!

When I got to the yard this morning I realised I had forgotten my gloves. I didn't have time to go back home and get them before my lesson so I ended up riding without them. My fingers ended up getting ripped to shreds and I have huge blisters on my fingers. I am never riding without gloves again!

has anyone got any tips for getting rid of blisters or making them a bit less sore?
 
I don't tend to ride with gloves at all :o and I ride two horses a day

My skin is horrid and thick :p I don't get blisters anymore! but they look horrid haha.

I used to just cut away the loose skin with nail clippers/little scissors and put plasters on and- that sorted them out as they dried up and healed quickly, seemed to take the pain off too.
 
I normally ride without as I can never get stuff out my pockets. But if I'm riding a strong horse I defiantly need gloves because I end up I your situation. Sounds horrible butI put them in warm salty water and I pop with pin. There gone in a day or two and I get no pain of them. Lol
 
Feeling your pain. I once went on hacking on a hot day, elected to leave my gloves at home, and ended up being out for three hours. My hands were shredded too.

Make sure you clean them thoroughly and air dry.
 
I think your all mad haha!

I gave my hands a good clean earlier and that hurt enough so I don't think i will be trying salt and water (I'm quite a wuss).

I have put plasters on one hand as I ran out so I will have to wait until tomorrow to get more. I will have to see if there is any real difference between the blisters on the plastered hand and the non plastered hand. It sound a bit like a science experiment haha.

I never wear gloves riding, and i didnt wear them driving either! I actually dont like gloves, except to keep my hands warm or for gardening!
Edited to say......having said that i will amend that to say i will use them for lunging after having the line ripped through my hand!! :(

I have horrible eczema on my hands and I don't wear gloves because of it, except in summer, where the irritation of horse hair is greater than the irritation of wearing gloves. Never once had a blister because of it, maybe my horse is lighter in his mouth than I thought :o must give the poor sod more credit! :cool:
 
I only ride in gloves to keep my hands warm! I do not like wearing gloves and have only once had blisters, riding a trecking horse in continental reins :D I was twelve at the time, so a long, long time ago!
 
I hate them, but nowadays I only ride my own horses who I won't allow to be heavy in the hand. If, for some reason, I did ride something that pulled I would wear them but I also know I'd moan & set about some serious reschooling.
 
I always ride in gloves, even on really hot days. Use roeckl gloves most of the year as they're nice & thin but grippy. End up with hideous blisters if I don't, my horse is very strong though always wondered if is be ok without with a less strong horse.
 
the skin on my hands is too soft and delicate to ride without gloves, i get blisters so easily and its horrible :/ but at the same time i hate the feeling of thick gloves that stop you from feeling the rains as well, so i went for SSG gloves, amazingly thin, and so so so grippy! they're truly amazing, putting them on feels like putting on a second layer of skin, they're that thin, but so durable as well :) they're just brill, love them :)
 
I hate riding in gloves, I have to wear them in winter as I'm always freezing and my hands seize up if not. I feel totally disconected from the horse if I have gloves on, I don't even go xc in them and only wear them for dressage because I have to :o. I don't have thick skin on my hands or any thing and I ride several different horses.
 
LOL I'm with the non gloves riders!!! If you get blisters from the reins imo you are holding them too tightly!!! Not releasing or holding too much contact!!! Sorry!! Gloves are for warmth in your really cold weather!!
 
I'm sorry. Delicate hands and horse ownership...? Didn't realise this could exist! You load of pansies ;)

I only wear gloves for keeping warm, xc, hunting, dressage and of course lunging. In summer my hands get horribly sweaty in gloves but the rockel ones are great :)
 
ooh I hate riding in gloves. sometimes I put them on if it's very cold but they always end up back in my pockets! I've got slim delicate hands but even with thin gloves on it just doesn't feel right. like others have said - I don't feel the right connection.
 
I always wore gloves all the time. This summer I started not wearing them and found I was better with my hands: less grabby, more sensitive to the horse.
Still wear them in the cold tho.
 
I don't wear gloves and I don't get blisters. I have heard from a gymnast who gets lots of blisters as part of the sport that pouring white spirit on blisters dries them up really quickly.
 
I always use gloves to ride- my horse is nice and light in the hand so it's not to protect them in that way but I have ridden with gloves for so long now it feels odd not to.

Also, you have to wear gloves for dressage comps etc and I wouldn't go xc without them so might as well ride in them all the time so it feels normal, rather than going to a comp and riding with a different feel to at home.

I like really lightweight roeckl gloves.
 
I wear gloves for warmth, only for grip if its an activity where sweat or water is likely to make my hands slip loads. Except where gloves are required turnout. And seen as the horses mouth is at the other end of the reins, I'd worry about the state of the horses mouth if my own fingers were blistered.
 
I asked for tips on how to get rid of blisters not a lecture on how I'm holding my reins to tight or i'm a pansy :rolleyes:

My horse is a very strong, stubborn late gelded, 4yr old welsh D. He is currently going through a stage of grabbing the bit in his mouth and pulling downwards very quickly. Yesterday, me and my instructor where working on preventing him from doing it and encouraging him to relax into the contact a bit more. I am in no way heavy handed or hold the reins to tightly, despite some people wanting to think so :rolleyes:

I use the jefferies bio grip (i think that is what they are called) reins. In the 9 years I have been riding, I have always worn gloves, but I have always gone for thin gloves. I have some woof wear ones and some mark todd thermal ones for the winter that are still fairly thin (I love these gloves!). I have quite small palms with very long fingers so it can be hard to find gloves that actually fit and reins that aren't too chunky.
