We had a bit of a weired moment last night out hacking. There is a quiet road near the farm, with empty fields either side, leading to another nearby farm. My horse has never felt happy going along this road and there is a certain point where he stops, raises his lip to identify a smell and then spends the rest of the time looking suspiciously in the hedges. Last night we got to this point and heard a creaking in a field to our right. When we got past I noticed that it was a wooden field gate, about 100 yards into the field, swaying back and forth but there was no wind. On the way back we were nearly at the same point when my horse suddenly stopped and went rigid, staring towards the opposite side of the road but there really wasn't anything or anyone there.
My YO has also said before that his horse doesn't like going up that road much either. I'm going to try and find some history on the area and, in the meantime, I'm sticking to a different route.

Do you know if any livestock has been buried on that field? I know alot of horses that go "wierd" when they can smell where dead livestock have been buried. I used to ride a rock steady cob. One day I went to ride him past a field where my friends hose had been PTS. He refused to go past. He couldn't see her (She was in the field awaiting pick up) etc. When Duchess had been removed from the field the cob walked past the field like nothing had happened..

You're not allowed to bury livestock anymore are you? Henry has panic attacks at anything, I never really think about them all that much, so used to it now lol!! But actually when I think about it, there are some places that he hates, and that tend to be quite creepy.

I don't think any livestock are buried there but there must be a strange smell of something and it's been there for a long time. I think the gate swinging on its own made my imagination run riot as that was quite spooky.

Yes. In GinGin's house post a bit further down I explained about an experience I had with her where she would point blank refuse to enter a field. She would balk & plant her feet & froth at the mouth, she is usually very forward going.

I used to have to go in there sometimes but got seriously spooked I had a constant feeling of dread etc. It made my skin crawl...

I do think they can sense things we can't.

There used to be an old abattoir near where we used to hack and the horses used to walk over the other side of the road or try and run past it as fast as they could.

I did a bit of research and the place closed down about 5 years previously before we even lived there so I think that they still picked up on the death that went on in there even though it had not happened in the last 5 years!

Very spooky!
