Just wondering how fast horses can get fat on spring grass??!

Mine were out last week and I was thinking they looked a bit ribby for this time of year and was considering a conditioning feed. All of a sudden, in about 3 days, they seem to have absolutely packed on the chub and now I'm wondering how I can get them thinner as they are looking distinctly porky. They don't have particularly good grazing and they're not getting hard feed so scratching my head a bit.

Anyone else having this problem?!

My local farmer rents fields to horses during the summer. He always says that horses pick up condition quicker than cattle. I have kocked my hard feed right back for my TB Mare, she looks brilliant at the moment.

Mine seems to be putting it on daily. I really will have to start and restrict his grazing. The trouble I have is that the other person who shares the field likes her Welsh D fat and gives them fresh grass every day. Tonight I will section off part of the field just for my horse.

Yep, about 4 days seems to do it! Mine evented on 3rd May then had last week off. Looked ok on Wednesday night when I left to go to Badminton & by Sunday night OMG elephant alert!

My OH assures me they did come in at night whilst I was away.

They do look better for being back into work & getting in as soon as I finish work but Bruno still doesnt resemble the fit event horse that he is meant to be!

pretty quickly! I was away for 3 days over the weekend, and got back last night to a distinctly rounder horse! And he is still on winter grazing - they are supposed to be moving onto summer grazing this weekend, but dont think he will be on there all day! He generally gets worked every day so hoping that the weight will stay off reasonabley well.

Mine has got maaahusive over the last couple of days even! I thought, "I must go buy him a grass muzzle this weekend" - he's nowhaving to be stabled in the day untill get one as he just ballooned!

my porky has been in her starvation paddock now for 3 weeks at least, she piled it on out in the big field within days.
She's happy though getting a hi-fi and supplement in mornings and 24hr soaked hay twice a day.

My cob has been on restricted since the end of Feb and my boy gets his paddock halved this weekend (its a surprise!

) as once we have this downpour that is predicted tomorrow/thurs/fri the grass will go mental.

I reckon on good lush grass they only need 3-5 days to start looking porky!!

Funny you should ask that. Looked at my pony yesterday and thought she looked decidedly rounded - she looked in great shape last week.

Cannot understand it as field is bare! Surely she can't eat any less.
